Description

Modular datacenter system and a rack housing unit and a method for building a modular datacenter
FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The invention relates to a modular datacenter system comprising a plurality of rack housing units, a rack housing unit and a method for building a modular datacenter. Such a modular datacenter system, rack housing unit and method is described in WO 2011/092333 Al.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
Modular and in particular mobile datacenters are used for providing data processing and data communication on a temporary basis and are implemented as almost fully self-supporting units.
International patent application publication WO 2011/092333 Al discloses a modular datacenter system, comprising a modular space defined by at least a bottom panel; and a front wall having substantially the same length as the bottom panel; a plurality of racks for holding equipment, the racks being aligned in an opening in the front wall along the length of the bottom panel; wherein a first side of the aligned plurality of racks is spaced away from a first edge along the length of the bottom panel at a distance substantially smaller than the width of the bottom panel, thus creating a ledge bottom part between the first edge of the bottom panel and the plurality of racks. With the one side of the racks spaced away from the first edge, a ledge is created. With first modular datacenter element placed against a second modular datacenter element arranged such that the front walls of two modular datacenter elements are substantially parallel to one another and facing each other with the ledges meeting each other, a corridor is created for inspecting equipment in racks of both modular datacenter elements. A second side of the aligned plurality of racks opposite to the first side of the racks is spaced away from a wall extending from the edge of the bottom panel opposite to the first edge of the bottom panel at a pre-determined distance determined by a dimension of the racks along the width of the bottom panel.
United States patent application publication US 2009/0229194 Al discloses a portable data center comprising one or more modular containers, the containers comprising expandable and retractable side walls, ceiling panels and floor panels and racks configured to securely hold equipment.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
It is an objective of the invention to provide a modular datacenter system that is easier, faster and/or more cost effective to build, to handle and/or to operate.
To that end each of said rack housing units comprises: a rectangular bottom panel having two long edges and two short edges; wherein each one of said bottom panels is provided with upright walls at their short edges; wherein two arrays of racks for holding equipment are placed on said bottom panel between said walls; wherein said arrays extend parallel to each other and to said walls; wherein the distance between each wall and the respective nearest array of racks is at least 30 cm; and wherein the distance between said arrays of racks is at least 30 cm; and wherein said rack housing units are placed with their long edges against each other, such that corridors extend between said walls and arrays of racks and between said arrays of racks along said plurality of rack housings. Preferably said rack housing units are substantially identical. In a full rack housing unit embodiment said arrays extend from one long edge to the opposite long edge of said bottom panel.

A method for building a modular data center comprising a plurality of rack housing units, each of the rack housing units comprising: a rectangular bottom panel with two long sides and two short sides; wherein each of the bottom panels is provided with upstanding walls on its short sides; wherein two rows of racks for holding equipment are placed on the bottom panel between the walls; the rows extending parallel to each other and to the walls; wherein the distance between the wall and the respective nearest row of racks is at least 30 cm; and wherein the distance between the rows of racks is at least 30 cm; and wherein the rack housing units are placed with their long edges against each other, so that corridors extend between the walls and the rows of racks and between the rows of racks along the number of rack housings.
