Description
PORTABLE DATA STORAGE DEVICE, METHOD OF APPLYING AND PACKAGE FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The invention relates to a portable data storage device. The invention also relates to a 5 method of applying a data storage device to the surface of a product. The invention further relates to a package comprising multiple data storage devices.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
A portable data storage device temporarily or permanently preserves information for 10 retrieval, in particular by a computer or other electronic device. Data storage devices may contain data of various types, including text, photos, audio, as well as multi-media presentations. Portable data storage devices typically have a small size suitable for storing the device in a pocket of a jacket, or a compartment of a briefcase.
15 Examples of data storage devices are USB sticks and flash data storage cards, which essentially consist of data storage chips in a body, which includes the actual memory chip and electronics. Bodies in various shapes and made of various materials including plastics, metal and cardboard are known. Usually, the body is provided with a data connector (such as a USB plug) to contact an input- and/or output device, for instance a 2 0 personal computer or TV screen. Optionally, data storage devices may have a protective cap to shield the contacts from accidental damage when not in use. In order to prevent loss, portable data storage devices are often provided with a ring or hole for securing the data storage device, for instance to a key ring or a lanyard.
25 OBJECT AND SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
It is an object of the invention to provide an improved portable data storage device, that overcomes at least some of the limitations of existing portable data storage devices. In particular, the invention intends to make it easier to attach portable data storage devices to other objects, either reversibly or semi-permanently.
30
The invention provides a portable data storage device provided with self-adhesive means for reversibly, semi-permanently or permanently attaching the data storage device to a surface. Thus, it is easy to temporarily fix the location of the data storage device, for instance on the surface of a desk, computer monitor or other object, where it 35 may be easily removed by hand for use or transportation. Reversibly means that the device can be attached and detached multiple times from the surface. Semipermanently means a permanent bonding to a surface, wherein the attachment can be 2 broken by hand force. Preferably, the self-adhesive means are integrated in the body of the data storage device. The body may have any suitable shape, but typically has a rectangular outer form. The self-adhesive means may for instance comprise an 5 adhesive layer applied to the body or another part of the portable data storage device. The reversibility and strength of the binding of the device 1 depends mostly on the type of adhesive used as well as the nature of the target surface: adhesives and glues suitable for reversible sticking to certain surfaces are commercially available. The data storage may for instance be a flash memory device such as a USB stick or a data 10 storage card such as an SD card or CompactFlash card, or any other portable data storage means. In a preferred embodiment, the self-adhesive means define a flat surface of the data storage device, making it easy to reversibly attach to a flat surface. Using the self-adhesive means, the portable data storage device according to the invention may be attached to any type of product, including but not limited to cards, 15 envelopes, flyers, manuals, media carriers, books, packages, food products, electronic devices, clothes, toys and tools.
In a preferred embodiment, the self-adhesive means comprise a re-adherable adhesive. Re-adherable adhesives are low-tack adhesives that allow for reapplying the data 2 0 storage device again to the same or a different surface after removal. Suitable re- adherable adhesives are known in the art, such as used in for instance Post-it sticky notes.
It is advantageous if the self-adhesive comprises an adhesive layer, at least partially 25 covered by a removable protective element. The removable protective element protects the adhesive layer from attracting dust and dirt, which may diminish the adherence effect. Thus, the adhesive layer remains useable even after prolonged storage. The removable protective element may for instance be a flexible sheet material.
3 0 Preferably, the adhesive layer comprises a pressure-sensitive adhesive. Pressure sensitive adhesives typically show little adherence when a small force is exerted, and a significantly stronger binding when a larger force is exerted. A pressure-sensitive adhesive is selected to prevent accidental adherence of the data storage device. When applying the device to the surface, the user may control the binding strength at which 35 the device is attached to a surface by controlling the exerted force. Suitable pressure-sensitive adhesives are known in the art.
3
In a preferred embodiment, the self-adhesive means comprise double-sided adhesive tape. Double-sided adhesive tape allows for a relatively easy manufacture of a device according to the invention. One side of the double-sided adhesive may be applied to the 5 data storage device, whereas the opposite site may be attached to a surface. In such a case, preferably the side of the tape in contact with the data storage device has a relatively strong binding force (preferably permanent) compared to the opposite side of the tape for attaching to a surface, which has a relatively low binding force wich allows for reversible attachment.
10
It is advantageous if the re-adherable self-adhesive means comprise Velcro. Velcro elements may form a reliable but reversible connection with a suitable surface, preferably another Velcro element. The use of Velcro avoids the use of adhesives and glues, although a special surface is necessary to allow for a proper attachment of the 15 device. Various types of Velcro are commercially available.
In a preferred embodiment, the data storage device is provided with a first Velcro layer, which first Velcro element is releasably attached to a second Velcro layer, wherein the second Velcro element is provided with a self-adhesive layer, optionally at least partially 2 0 covered by a removable protective sheet. Thus, any surface may be made suitable for attaching the device through a Velcro connector element by attaching the second Velcro element using a suitable adhesive. This adhesive may permanently bind to the surface, whereas the Velcro provides a reversible attachment of the device.
25 It is advantageous if the device has a first surface provided with visual information, wherein self-adhesive means are located on a second surface of the device, opposite to the first surface. Thus, in the situation wherein the device is attached to a surface by the self-adhesive means such as an adhesive layer or Velcro, the visual information is optimally positioned to be seen by a user.
30
In a preferred embodiment, the data storage device is reversibly, semi-permanently or permanently attached through the self-adhesive means to the surface of a product. The self-adhesive means allow for easy and rapid manufacture by attaching the data storage device to the surface of the product, using the self-adhesive means. The data 35 storage device may be released from the product, for instance to use the data contained in the data storage device. The data storage device may for instance contain information associated with the product it is attached to, such as a manual or instruction 4 video, or software to use in association with the product. The product may for instance be a postcard, a business card, the piano of a package or the assembled package.
5 The invention also provides a method of applying a data storage device to the surface of a product, comprising the steps of - providing a portable data storage device according to the invention, and - using the self-adhesive means of the data storage device to attach the data storage device to the product in a reversible, semi-permanent or permanent way.
10 The self-adhesive means allow for easy and rapid manufacture by attaching the data storage device to the surface of the product, using the self-adhesive means.
The invention further provides a package comprising multiple data storage devices according to the invention. Such a package allows for organised storage of multiple data 15 storage devices.
In a preferred embodiment, at least one data storage device is reversibly attached to at least one other device of the same type to form a stack of data storage devices. The stack allows for a very compact and controlled storage, transport and handling of 2 0 multiple devices according to the invention, even without the uses of external means such as a wrapper or a package. The stack allows a user or machine to remove a single or multiple data devices from the stack when needed. The devices may for instance be mutually connected by intermediated adhesive layers or Velcro.
25 In another preferred embodiment, multiple data storage devices according to the invention are reversibly attached to a common substrate. This allows for a controlled storage, transport and handling of multiple storage devices according to the invention. This may for instance be useful in situations wherein the position of the data storage device needs to be fixed temporarily, such as the application of visual information by 30 printing to the device. The common substrate may for instance be a rigid or flexible sheet material.
In a preferred embodiment, the common substrate is a flexible sheet material, preferably suitable to form a roll comprising multiple data storage devices. This allows 35 for a compact storage of multiple devices according to the invention, allowing for easy dispensing of single storage devices.

DESCRIPTION OF PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS
Figures 1a shows a portable data storage device 1 according to the invention, which may for instance be a USB-stick or memory card. The data storage device comprises a body 2, for instance made of plastic, metal, cardboard or another suitable material, 15 which contains the memory chips and other electronics for storing data. The body 2 has a basic shape in this example, but may have any suitable shape, including geometric shapes or miniature versions of real-life objects such as buildings or cars. The body also comprises electrical contacts 3 for accessing or writing the stored data through a compatible data port of for instance a personal computer, mobile phone or TV screen. A 2 0 part of the body is provided with a self-adhesive layer 4, protected by a removable protective sheet 5, which may be removed in order to reveal the adhesive beneath, as shown in figure 1b. Revealing the sticky adhesive layer 4 allows sticking the data storage device 1 to a suitable surface such as a desk, paper file, card, or housing of a computer monitor, or any other object. The adhesive is a low tack adhesive, resulting in 2 5 a non-permanent and reversible adhering of the device 1 to the surface. The device 1 may be temporarily fixed to a surface, for instance for storage or to prevent loss, and may subsequently be removed and used. The sticky layer 4 may be applied separately, or as a side of double-sided adhesive tape, in which case the opposite side of the double-sided tape would be adhered permanently to the body 2. In a preferred 3 0 embodiment, the used adhesive 4 is pressure-sensitive, allowing controlling the strength of adherence by varying the pressure used to attach the device 1 to a surface. The reversibility and strength of the binding of the device 1 depends mostly on the type of adhesive used as well as the nature of the target surface: adhesives and glues suitable for reversible sticking to certain surfaces are commercially available. The side of the 35 storage device 31 facing away from the adhesive layer 4 may provide visual information.
6
Figure 1c show an alternative preferred embodiment of a data storage device 8 according to the invention. Some parts are similar to the embodiment shown in figures 1a and 1b, and are labelled accordingly. The difference is that in this case the adhesive 5 layer 4 covered by a protective sheet 5 is indirectly attached to the body 2 through two interacting Velcro layers 6,7. The adhesive layer 4 is used to attach the first Velcro element 6 to a location on a surface. The binding of the Velcro layer 6 to the surface may be permanent. The second Velcro element 7 is permanently attached to the body 2 of the data storage device. Using the binding force of the two Velcro elements achieves 10 a reversible coupling of the data storage device to the surface the first Velcro layer 6 is attached to.
Figure 2a shows a portable data storage device 20 according to the invention reversibly or semi-permanently attached to a regular postcard 21. A receiver of the postcard may 15 remove the data storage device in order to view the data on the storage device, which may for instance contain holiday photos or a digital movie file. The side of the storage device 31 facing away from the postcard may show visual information, for instance a commercial message.
2 0 Figure 2b shows a package 22 for a product package, which has a portable data storage device 23 provided with an adhesive layer according to the invention semipermanently attached to it. The data storage device may be ripped from the package by hand. A person purchasing the product may remove the data storage device from the package in order to view its contents on for instance a personal computer. The data 25 storage device 23 may for instance contain a digital manual for the product in the package 22, an instruction video and/or software for using with the product. The side of the storage device 23 facing away from the package may provide visual information, for instance an indication of the contents or the associated product name.

The product comprises a card 25, for instance a leaflet, flyer or business card, with a data storage device 26 according to the invention, which is permanently or semi-permanently attached to the card 25 using an adhesive. The use of a data storage device 26 with a self-adhesive layer allows for the easy and fast manufacture of the card product 24. The 35 end of the storage device, in this case a USB-stick, is provided with electrical contacts 27 that are protruding from the card surface, thus allowing use of the data storage device while it is still attached to the card 25. The card, 25, which has an essentially 7 rectangular surface, has a cut-off corner 28. The cut-off corner is designed to accommodate the distal end 27 of the data storage device within the rectangular shape of the card 25, thus facilitating the enclosure of the card product 24 in a regular postal 5 envelope.
Figure 3a shows a stack 30 of storage devices 31 according to the invention, reversibly adhered to each other by an adhesive layer 32 applied to one side of each device. Manual removal of a single storage device from the stack reveals the next storage 10 device in the stack, allowing for a compact, controlled and convenient storage of multiple storage devices according to the invention. The side of the storage device 31 facing upwards from the stack may contain visual information, for instance a brand name.
15 Figure 3b shows a preferred embodiment of a package 33 of data storage devices 35 according to the invention.
