Description

Multifunctional connector plug and method for portable electronic devices.
Description 5 Technical Field
Embodiments of the invention relate to multifunctional connector plugs structured to fit into universal connector jacks like audio or Micro USB jacks of portable electronic devices like smartphones with touchscreens. The invention also relates to such plugs comprising of means for functionalities like; use as a 10 stylus, or for temporarily fixating or positioning the plug and the electronic device if connected to an object like a finger or onto a surface for watching the touchscreen hands free from a distance.
Background Art 15 The market for new generation smartphones is rapidly growing as these smartphones provide fairly big screens compared to normal mobile phones, and have become powerful enough to accomplish most of the tasks that previously required a personal computer. These tasks include; internet browsing, email, GPS navigation, messaging, or watching videos. Increasingly 20 these smartphones are also configured without keyboards using only touchscreens to reduce highly desired space within these devices. In addition when browsing on the internet a keyboard is not very helpful as one has to point at very small objects on a screen. However using your fingertips to point or write on these touchscreens is often inconvenient as one easily presses the 25 wrong key due to the large finger tips relative to the size of the letters on the screen as the screen size is limited. This can especially be very difficult for people with very large fingers or fingernails. There is also a growing tendency to use capacitive touchscreen in smart phones. These capacitive screens only react on an electrical conductive (fingertip) or magnetic body when touching 30 the screen. However, when a fingernail or somebody wearing gloves touches the screen it does not respond. Another problem using fingers is that the screen often smudges which for capacitive touchscreens can even lower the 1038411 2 responsiveness of the screen to a touch. For one or more of these reasons the stylus was introduced which normally is a pen shaped body with a narrow rounded tip that touches the screen. For a resistive touchscreen a nonconductive tip can be used and for a capacitive touchscreen a conductive 5 or magnetic stylus tips tend to be used to be able to easily write or point on the touchscreens. With touchscreen displays in portable devices becoming much more common and with the increased resolution of such displays, a user can conveniently communicate a lot of information to the device in a short of time using a stylus in combination with a touchscreen.
10
Due to on-going standardization regulations more and more mobile (smart) phone device makers are also forced by governments or have agreed to use more standard or universal connection receptacles also known as jacks as connector means for; device charging, data communication or audio signals.
15 Connector jacks like Micro Universal Serial Bus (USB) connectors and also
Tip Ring Sleeve (TRS) connector jacks like audio jacks are more and more integrated into these devices as it is a universal standard for connectors.
Problem 20 There are now a days in general two main types of styli for portable touchscreen devices and both with their inconveniences: 1) Either they provide a separate stylus which if possible can be secured to the portable device or clothing by means of a strap body. The problem hereby is that they; are easily lost especially when not secured, can be forgotten to 25 take along, and they are a separate object to take along that can give discomfort while carrying. When taking such a stylus along inside the same clothing pocket and/or when attached to the mobile device by a strap they can unintentionally touch the touchscreen and thereby unlock and activate the device or even scratch the touchscreen and device housing.
30 2) Other portable touchscreen devices come with a customized stylus which is integrated in the device’s body or housing. The problems hereby are that; they are customized to the shape and size of the specific device model, and that the place to store the stylus occupies additional space in these devices 3 which is hardly needed to make them smaller. For this reason in general only some devices makers choose this option and there is also no standardization for this customized stylus so when you lose it, which is quiet easy due to the small size, you will have to find an original equipment stylus 5 of the exact same kind and shape or otherwise it will not fit.
As mentioned, said smartphones are also used more and more to watch videos or to navigate in cars using an integrated GPS system. However said devices do not come with integrated means for fixating or positioning the 10 device on other objects or surfaces in order to prevent the electronic device from; tumbling, moving or for creating a desired screen view angle in order to watch the screen hands free from a distance. Some (smartphone) device makers offer an additional customized kit that can be bought like a plastic device holder with a flexible arm (gooseneck) and suction cup mount is mechanism for car navigation. The problem is that these kits are large in size and therefor inconvenient to take along. These kits are also customized to the shape of the electronic device so once more there is no standard solution that can fit to all.
20 Solution
Thus it would be advantageous if a standard solution was developed that would allow users of devices like smartphones to more easily and conveniently carry around a compact stylus and/or positioning or fixating means that can be plugged into any smartphone with a standard connector jack preventing the 25 stylus or fixating means from becoming lost or forgotten to take along and which preferably does not occupy significantly more space around the smartphone.
Summary of the invention 30 The present invention offers the advantage of a multifunctional connector plug which can be used as a stylus and/or to position or fixate the connected electronic device like a smartphone onto a surface. When not being used the plug is easily stored in the universal connector jack of the smartphone, 4 preferably without significantly occupying any additional space. This way the plug can be taken along conveniently together with the smartphone thereby also preventing the plug from becoming lost. The plug can for instance be stored in a standard stereo audio jack (3,6mm) or a Micro Universal Serial Bus 5 (USB) connector jack depending on the plug configuration. As the audio or Micro USB jack is only used when for instance listening to music or when connecting to another electronic device, the jack space in the meanwhile can be used to store the multifunctional plug and so highly desired space is saved. Another advantage is that by filling up especially the audio jack with such a ίο plug no; dirt, dust, water, humidity or any other unwanted substance can enter into the electronic device through the jack orifice which otherwise could possibly cause damage or early failures to the electronic device.
When listening to music or when attaching another electronic device, the plug can be easily attached to a cable of such electronic device using a strap at the 15 plug end part so that the plug does not get lost. The same strap or a slot within the plug can also be used to; pull out the plug from the jack, to hold the plug or even to temporarily fixate the plug to a fingertip when used as a stylus.
The plug can further comprise of an extendible stylus tip to improve holding ergonomics and functionality hereby using the maximum available space 20 without significantly enlarging the electronic device’s dimensions when plugged in. In addition the plug end part or another body connected to the plug end part can be configured with means for fixating or positioning the plug and connected electronic device onto other objects or surfaces thereby preventing the electronic device from tumbling or moving. One can also use the plug for 25 creating a desired screen viewing angle when placed or fixated on a surface by means of an; extendable, hingeable or flexible arm body, attached to the plug end part. In addition the plug end or attached body can also comprise of a suction cup mount mechanism. Due to that said electronic devices like smartphones also tend to become lighter in weight the extendible or flexible 30 arm body for holding and fixating the device including the suction cup can also be made significantly smaller and therefor will also be more convenient to take along.
5
Additionally the plug can be provided with a small rechargeable battery to power a laser light for use as a laser stylus or to power a coil in the stylus tip for functioning as a capacitive touchscreen stylus creating a small electromagnetic field. In addition the plug can even comprise of means for 5 storing digital information like a flash drive or memory card and/or memory card slot. In particular for a Micro USB plug configuration one can make use of the charging and data communications capacities of such connector when connected to the electronic device to provide power to such a battery and to be able to connect to data storing means and communicate the data.

Detailed description of embodiments with use of drawings 20 The present invention now will be described more fully hereinafter with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which many different, but not all embodiments of the inventions are shown. Indeed, these inventions may be embodied in many different forms and should not be construed as limited to the embodiments set forth herein; rather, these embodiments are provided so 25 that this disclosure will satisfy applicable legal requirements. Like numbers refer to like or practically similar elements throughout.
In Fig.1 shows an exemplary portable touchscreen device, in particular a smartphone, comprising of the following elements; a device body or housing 30 (2), a touchscreen (4), an audio connector jack (6) and a Micro USB connector jack (8). The presence and position of described elements may vary depending on device model or brand. The smartphone is only illustrated 9 exemplarily to show and explain the functions of the invention in the embodiments that now will be provided.
A first embodiments of the present invention provides a multifunctional connector plug as shown in Fig.2 wherein said plug includes a rounded plug 5 tip part (14) which can function as a stylus tip and a plug-end part (12) with structure for grabbing and holding using fingers, wherein both parts are connected to a plug part (10) which is structured in such a way that it in can be plugged and/or fitted into a standard audio jack located in portable touchscreen devices like smartphones (6, Fig.1). The plug part (10) is ίο cylindrically shaped and preferably has one or more recesses (15) and towards the plug tip (14) comprises of a torpedo like shape (17). The end part (12) is preferably provided with an orifice (16) to attach a strap like body (18) with the means to attach the plug to another object, where said object is preferably a headphone plug or cable (not shown) when said headphone is 15 plugged into the smartphone instead of the multifunctional plug.
A similar embodiment is shown in Fig.3 where the plug part (11) is structured to fit into a Micro Universal Serial Bus (USB) connector jack (8, Fig.1). The plug part (11) is rectangular shaped, comprises of a cavity (15) and preferably 20 comprises of at least one snap fit like member (20). The plug tip part (141) is rounded thereby making it functional as a stylus tip. The strap like body (18) can be attached to preferably a USB connector cable plug (not shown) when plugged into the portable touchscreen device for charging or data communication purposes.
25
In another embodiment as shown in Fig.4a the plug end part (12) is preferably oblong shaped with rounded corners and edges. The plug end part (12) is preferably nonconcentric with respect to the audio configured plug part (10) thereby maximizing the plug end’s dimensions with the means to be larger for 30 improved finger holding convenience while also maintaining the ability to be able to be plugged into many different smartphone devices (Fig.4b) without exceeding the smartphone’s outer dimensions like thickness or width. This way the end part (12) will not significantly enlarge the smartphone's 10 dimensions. The plug end part (12) preferably also has round corners and edges to prevent; clothing, fabrics or other objects from being hooked up by the plug end (12) and this shape also improves finger grabbing and holding convenience. In addition the plug end 12 can comprise of a carve shape 712 5 to improve holding functionality when tip 21 is used as a stylus tip. The end plug part (12) can also comprise of a cavity 812 or half-moon cross-section to be able to cover buttons which for some devices could rise slightly out of the smartphone body (2). Another advantage for an audio plug configuration as shown in Fig.4a is that, by turning (13) the plug end part (12) within the audio ίο jack (Fig.4c) one can deliberately make the plug end part (12) much wider than the touchscreen device thickness (Fig.4a/b) hereby facilitating the pull out of the plug as one can grip easily from under the plug end 812 and pull the plug up. The plug end (12) can also be turned preferably by 90 degrees (13) as shown in Fig.4c, where said plug end (12) can now also function as a is support for positioning the smartphone in an up-right position preventing the smartphone from tumbling. This would be convenient if one would like to position the device on a surface like a table (not shown) for; taking a steady photo, grabbing a video or watching a video on the screen (4) hands free and/or from a distance. With the same configuration it is also possible to 20 position the smartphone in an angle on a surface (not shown) whereby tip (21) and one side of the smartphone’s body (2) touches the surface.
A further embodiment of the present invention as shown in Fig.5a/b provides an audio configured plug (Fig.5a) and a Micro USB configured plug (Fig.5b) 25 wherein the plug end parts (12) comprise of a tip part (21) which can function as a stylus tip.
In another exemplary embodiment of the present invention an audio configured plug is provided as shown in Fig.6 wherein the plug end part (12) is 30 tripod like shaped with the means to improve finger grabbing and holding ergonomics, particularly when taking the plugs end part (12) between; thumb, middle and pointing finger, and where said end part 12 can also be used to 11 position the touchscreen device when turned within an audio jack using the three portions of the plug end part 12 as a support.
An alternative embodiment of the present invention provides a plug (Fig.7) as 5 mentioned before wherein the plug end part (12) comprises of a handle like structure (212) with the means to grab and to attach a strap through the orifice (16) which is created by the handle (212).
Another embodiment of the present invention, as illustrated in Fig.8a, provides io a plug as mentioned earlier wherein said plug includes a plug tip part (14) which can function as a stylus tip and a plug end part (12) for grabbing wherein both parts are connected to an audio configured plug part (10) which at the top comprises of a vertical slot (22) going preferably about half way downwards towards to the tip part (14) and/or comprises of a horizontal slot 15 (24) in the plug end part (12) where both are shaped in such a way that an interference fit is created with a fingernail (not shown) when pushed into said slot with the means of holding the plug when used as a stylus and thereby improving the plug functionality and ergonomics particularly for those with fairly large fingernails. The plug end part (12) comprises of a surface and 20 orifice (16) where against a fingertip can be placed when a fingernail (not shown) is pushed into the vertical slot (22). The plug end part (12) preferably also comprises of an augmented portion (312) to create enough thickness for making the horizontal slot (24) and to increase the contact surface with the fingernail. In addition the horizontal slot (24) can also be used to pull out the 25 plug from the audio jack using a fingernail. Preferably, the portion of the slot (22, 24) within the plug end part (12) has about the same width as a (pointing) fingernail (around 10mm), and the slot gap size is equal or less than the thickness of an average fingernail thickness (around 0,4mm).The slot preferably also follows a similar curvature as a fingernail.
Fig.8b shows a similar embodiment as before wherein the plug end (12) comprises of a horseshoe shaped clamp structure (412) to temporarily fixate the plug to a fingertip (not shown) when pushed between the two clamp 30 12 portions (412). In addition the audio configured plug part (10) comprises of a recess (622) and at the end of the recess a slot (222) wherein a fingernail can be pushed similar to the prior embodiment. This way one can fixate the plug on a fingertip and use the plug tip (14) as a stylus tip. In a similar embodiment, 5 as shown in Fig.8c, a clamp structure (612) could also be used to fixate the plug and connected device to objects like a car air vent for GPS navigation.
An alternative embodiment of the one described previously is illustrated in Fig.9 and comprises of a plug with a tip part (21) which can function as a ίο stylus tip. This tip part (21) is located on top of a plug end part (12) which is connected to a Micro USB configured plug part (11) and which at the bottom comprises of a vertical slot (26) going preferably about halfway upwards towards the plug end (12) and where said slot (26) is structured in such a way that an interference fit is created with a fingernail (not shown) when said 15 fingernail is pushed into said slot (26).
Another embodiment of the present invention as shown in Fig. 10a provides an audio configured plug wherein said plug includes a plug end part (12) connected to an audio configured plug part (10) which at the top comprises of 20 a circular slot (28) to guide a strap (18) through an orifice (16) with the means to attach the strap to the plug part (10). The strap can be used to pull out the plug and for grabbing the plug between fingers when the plug tip part (14) is used as a stylus tip.
In Fig. 10b a different embodiment is shown of a strap configuration for a Micro 25 USB configured plug where the plug end part (12) is preferably coupled with a wide band strap (19) made out of an elastic material. The plug end (12) also comprises of a stylus tip (21) and a vertical augmentation (23). In this configuration a fingertip (not shown) can be pushed between the elastic strap (19) and the plug end part (12) up to the vertical augmentation (23) in order to 30 temporarily fixate the plug to said fingertip for pulling out the plug and/or for holding the plug when used as a stylus. Both the plug tip part (141) and preferably the plug end part tip (21) can be used as a stylus tip. The band strap (19) preferably passes through at least one similar cross section shaped 13 orifice (15) located at the sides of the plug end part (12). The portion of the strap (19) below the plug end part (12) can be irreversibly fixated to the plug end (12) by means of gluing. Preferably at least one end of the strap (19) passes through at last two orifices (15) located close to each other creating a 5 buckle like mechanism for adjusting the strap length above plug end part (12) with the means to be able to adjust to more different finger sizes.
A further embodiment of the present invention is illustrated in Fig.11a/b and Fig.12a/b. An audio configured plug is provides wherein said plug includes an io extendible plug tip part (14) which can be extended by means of a screw movement. Plug tip part (14) can function as a stylus tip and comprises of a cylinder-shaped body (34) with an inner (female) screw thread (30). The plug part (10) inside is configured with an outer (male) screw thread (32) so that it can receive the cylinder-shaped body (34) with opposite screw thread by a 15 (anti) clockwise movement (38). This results in enlarging or reducing of the distance between the plug tip (14) and plug end (12) and thereby can improve ergonomics and functionality of the plug when used as a stylus. Preferably the tip part (14) has side ribs (36) to improve finger grip for better accomplishing the (anti) clockwise movement (38). The tip part with an inner (female) screw 20 thread (30) is preferred as to better protect the external screw thread from damage and to create a more robust tip part which is easier inserted into the plug’s external male thread.
Another embodiment of the present invention, as shown in Fig.13a/b and 25 Fig.14a/b, provides a telescopically extendible plug wherein said plug is configured for an audio jack and includes preferably an extendible plug tip part (14) that can function as a stylus tip which comprises of a cavity provided with an irreversible; snap, screw or interference fit means (44), and which is attached to a telescopic part (40) by means of a counter; snap, screw or 30 interference fit means (44) preferably in combination with gluing to accomplish an irreversible connection. The other end of the telescopic part (40) has preferably a slightly wider diameter (46) which provides a reversible interference fit (46, 50) when telescopic part 40 is pulled (58) almost fully 14 through telescopic part 42 which at the start has a slightly narrower diameter (50). Body 42 at the end also has a slightly wider diameter (48) which creates an interference fit when telescopic part 42 is pulled (60) almost fully through a tubular shaped end part (12) and plug part (10) which inside at the start also 5 has a slightly narrower diameter (52). Hereby a telescopic extension of the plug tip part (14) is accomplished with the means to improve ergonomics and functionality even further when used as a stylus. In a retracted configuration (Fig.14a/b) for plugging into a smartphone audio jack (6, Fig.1) an extra interference fit (54,56) can be created between circular rib 56 and circular io cavity 54 with the means to prevent uncontrolled enlargement of the plug when being pulled out of said smartphone audio jack. In an alternative embodiment this interference fit could be left out as the interference fits 46 with 50 and 48 with 52 already prevent the plug tip part (14) from becoming separated from plug part 10. It could also be an advantage to be able to 15 already enlarge the plug just by pulling it out of the jack (6, Fig. 1) as the interference of plug 10 with the audio jack is already sufficient to prevent uncontrolled unplugging as well. It is obvious that for both embodiments the interference fits 46 and 50 and 48 and 52 should be strong enough to prevent retraction of the telescopic inner part when pointing softly at a touchscreen but 20 weak enough to retract the extended parts again by pushing with fingers. Hereby also damage to a touchscreen can be prevented when someone points with too much force at a touchscreen as the stylus tip will retract eventually.
25 Another embodiment of the present invention as shown in Fig.15a/b and Fig.16a/b, provides an audio configured plug wherein said plug includes an extendable plug tip part (14) which can function as a stylus tip and preferably be locked at different desired plug lengths. Plug tip part (14) inside is provided with a cavity which is attached to a plunger shaped body (62) by means of a 30 counter snap or interference fit (70), preferably in combination with gluing to accomplish an irreversible connection. The other end of the plunger shaped body (62) is provided with preferably two dome shaped protrusions (64) on opposite sites. The plug part (10) is tubular shaped and inside preferably 15 configured with an oval cross-section shape (66) with at one end a slightly more narrow mouth (68) to prevent the passage of the dome shaped protrusions (64). Body 62 can be inserted into plug part 10 before mounting the tip and can move in three directions (72, 74, 76) and be locked at any 5 desired length by a (anti-) clock wise twist movement of the plunger body (62) and plug tip part (14) causing the dome shaped protrusions (64) to form a reversible interference fit with the oval shaped inner part wall surface (66).
This way a plug is provided which fits into an audio jack of a smartphone device and when unplugged can easily be enlarged (Fig.15a/b) by a twist ίο movement (74) to unlock and a pull movement (76) to enlarge. When the desired length is reached for use as a stylus the plug length is locked again by a twist (74). In addition plug tip part 14 can never be enlarged too much thereby preventing the risk of becoming separated from the plug part (10).
15 Another embodiment as shown in Fig.17a/b and Fig.18a/b provides a plug configured for Micro USB jacks, wherein the plug comprises of a telescopically extendable tip part (21) which can function as a stylus tip and which is connected to two cylindrical shaped bodies (80) that can slide into two similar shaped orifices (90) passing through the plug part (11) where said cylindrical 20 bodies (80) at the bottom ends have a protrusion or wider diameter (82) and said similar shaped orifices at the top side have similar shaped protrusions or a more narrow diameter (84) which create a reversible interference fit (82, 84) when the body 80 is pulled upwards (88) by grabbing the plug end tip part (21) with the means of enlarging the plug for improved stylus functionality. In a 25 closed configuration when plugged in (Fig.18a/b) body 80 is pressed downwards whereby an extra reversible interference fit (86) can be created between circular outer part 92 and circular inner part 94 (Fig. 17b) preventing uncontrolled enlarging of the plug tip (21).
30 A further embodiment of the present invention as illustrated in Fig. 19a and Fig. 19b, provides a plug wherein said plug includes an audio configured plug part (10) or Micro USB configured plug part (11) which at one end comprise of a plug tip part (14 or 141) which can function as a stylus and at the other end 16 has a plug end part (12) with structure for grabbing and where said end part (12) comprises of preferably an elastic suction cup body (99) connected (97) to the plug end part. This suction cup body (99) can create a reversible fixation when another object like a fingertip or another surface (not shown) is pushed 5 onto said suction cup (99). The temporary fixation created between the fingertip and the suction cup (99) can be used to pull out the plug from the connector jack and/or to hold the plug when used as a stylus. As shown in Fig. 19c the suction cup can also be used to temporarily fixate the plug and connected smartphone to other objects or surfaces like a car window screen ίο or table (not shown). This could be useful when for instance the smartphone is used; as a navigator in a car, to make a steady picture or watch the screen from a distance fixating the device in a certain position so that it cannot tumble. The suction cup (99) should have sufficient load capacity depending on the aimed purpose of fixation. The suction cup can be properly connected is (97) to the end part (12) by means of; two component injection moulding, a mechanical fixation like a screw, interference or snap fit and/or a chemical fixation like gluing the suction cup to the plug part (10 or 11) and/or plug end part (12). The plug part (10) as shown in Fig. 19a can also be made shorter in order to improve stability when fixated on a fingertip for use as a stylus 20 although maintaining also its overall plug capacity when plugged into the jack (6, Fig.1). For fixating or positioning functions this would however be less desired as the plug will come out of the jack more easily.
Alternatively to the prior embodiment the plug end part could be provided with a magnetic body (not shown) to temporarily fixate the plug end part on a metal 25 surface.
In another embodiment, as shown in Fig.20a/b/c/d, the plug end part (12) is connected to another oblong body (96) by preferably a door or barrel like friction hinge mechanism (102). This body (96) increases the overall plug 30 length and thereby improves ergonomics and functionality when used as a stylus. When not being used as a stylus (Fig.20a) the audio configured plug (10) is plugged into the audio jack as shown in Fig.20c and the body (96) is placed at an angle of preferably 90 degrees (106) towards the plug part (10) 17 and kept close to the body of the smartphone (2). When using the plug for instance as a stylus (Fig.20b) the body (96) is pivoted (106) with a slight friction until it cannot be turned any further due to the planar surface (100) of the body (96) hitting the plug end’s planner surface (104). The body (96) can 5 be of different lengths and shapes although preferably it is oblong and its cross section is half a circle or triangular with the planar part supporting against the smartphone housing body (2). The plug end (12) can also be equipped with an orifice for attaching a strap and the end part of body 96 on the opposite side of the hinge mechanism (102) can also be provided with a ίο generally pointed tip part (98) that can function as a stylus tip. As shown in Fig.20d the plug within the jack (6) can be turned (108) with some slight friction, where now the body 96 can function to position the plug and connected electronic device body (2) on other objects or surfaces like a table (not shown). This can be useful to watch the screen (4) hands free from a 15 distance by positioning the smartphone device in a desired view angle (108). The end of body 96 can also be provided with a suction cup or magnet like body (not shown) to temporarily fix the body 96 to another object or surface. In addition body 96 could be flexible or comprise of means for enlarging the body (96) length similar to earlier mentioned embodiments like comprising of 20 telescopic inner parts. This would improve stylus functionality but also one can adjust the viewing angle more precisely when used to position the device on a surface. Tip part 98 can furthermore comprise of a soft rubber like surface to prevent sliding when positioned on smooth surfaces.
In an alternative embodiment as shown in Fig 21a/b, the Micro USB 25 configured plug part (11) comprises of a plug end part (12) which is connected to another body (96) by preferably a ball (110) and socket (114) like friction hinge mechanism which has more rotational freedom to position the body 96 with respect to the plug end part (12). In case of a door like mechanism applied it should pivot around the plug part axis as a USB plug cannot rotate 30 when plugged in. The end 98 of body 96 preferably comprises of a stylus tip function where said tip can also be used to position the plug and connected smartphone (not shown) in many different angles with respect to another object or surface. When not being used to position nor used as a stylus the 18 plug part 11 is plugged into a Micro USB connector jack and the pin shaped portion 112 located at the plug end 12 enters into a cavity 116 located in the body 96 hereby causing a reversible interference fit between the cavity 116 and the pin 112 and thereby preventing uncontrolled rotating or pivoting of 5 body 96 with respect to the plug end part (12).
In an alternative embodiment as shown in Fig.22a/b/c, an audio configured plug is provided which comprises of a plug end part (12) that is connected to another body (96) which comprises of a flexible material making it freely ίο bendable with respect to the plug (10) and/or plug end part (12). Said body 96 out of bendable material is also known as a gooseneck or flexible arm where said bendable material is preferably a stiff although bendable metal core with a flexible plastic cover or coating material. The end part 98 of flexible body 96 can be configured to function as a stylus tip. In addition at least one suction 15 cup (99) can be mounted on body 96 preferably by means of a clamping ring (120) which can move up and down body 96 and be locked onto body 96 at the desired distance from tip 98. Said suction cup 99 can be used to position the plug with connected smartphone in many different angles (Fig.22b and 22c) with respect to another object or surface like a car window screen (not 20 shown). To improve stability the plug end part (12) can be made larger and especially for an audio plug connector preferably has at least one extra pin body 121 which acts as a support against the smartphone housing body (2), thereby preventing the connected smartphone from pivoting around the plug axis when the suction cup (99) is fixated to another surface than the 25 smartphone. The flexible body (96) itself can also be bended in such a way that it acts as a support for undesired pivoting as shown in Fig.23c. When not being used to position nor used as a stylus and when plugged into a connector jack the suction cup(s) can be fixated onto the smartphone housing body (2) hereby preventing uncontrolled bending or moving of flexible body 96 with 30 respect to the plug end part (12).
In an additional embodiment one can think of providing the mentioned multifunctional plugs (not shown) with a small light emitting diode (LED) and/or 19 laser light which could be provided with power from the electric device battery through preferably a Micro USB-connector plug configuration with actual contacts. The plug can also comprise of preferably a small rechargeable battery that can be recharged by the smartphone device battery when plugged 5 in. The LED can be configured to blink indicating the location or presence of the plug and/or the plug can comprise of means to switch the LED or laser light on or off whenever a lamp function of the plug is desired or not. The laser light could be used to function as a laser stylus for devices with a Laser Touchscreen which detect a laser light instead of or apart from a touch or 10 electric field variation. Another application could be a laser pointing device for pointing on screens or objects from a distance when giving for instance presentations using a projector screen where alternatively the plug can be kept plugged into the smartphone. This way the whole smartphone can be used to point and the power to drive the laser light can be drained directly from 15 the smartphone itself.
As a capacitive touchscreen can also function with a stylus tip that creates an electric and/or magnetic field, one can also provide a plug (not shown) with a tip that can function as a stylus by providing the tip inside with an electrically conductive coil and/or wire. This coil and/or wire will be powered comparable 20 to the LED or Laser light as mentioned earlier but preferably only creates an electric and/or magnetic field when unplugged. This can be accomplished by an on/off button although preferably by an electrical circuitry in the plug and/or software in the smartphone that detects the plug when plugged into the smartphone and automatically cuts off the power provided to the coil and 25 starts charging the battery within the plug and vice versa.
In addition or alternatively to these embodiment a plug with preferably a Micro USB configuration (not shown) can also comprise of means to store digital information like a slot for receiving a memory card and/or comprise of digital information storing and communication means like a flash drive integrated in 30 the plug, where the plug is provided with actual contacts so that the connected smartphone can communicate with said data storing means.
Preferred embodiment 20
In general an audio plug embodiment would be preferred over a Micro USB plug configuration mainly because the audio plug is bigger and it can rotate around its axis when plugged in. The audio jacks also tend to be uncovered 5 unlike Micro USB jack configurations which can have small plastic or rubber covers tapping the jack. However the USB plug configurations can comprise of more functions added to the plug like comprising of; a battery, lamp or memory storing means, as the USB plug configuration could permit a data communication and/or charging connection with the connected electronic 10 device. Therefor there is no overall preferred embodiment as in general a trade-off is made between improved or additional functionality and additional space occupied by the plug when connected and/or the perceived convenience of using the plug and carrying around the plug along with the smartphone.
15
For all mentioned embodiments the preferable production methods could be;
Selective Laser Sintering, Stereo lithography, (micro) injection moulding, two-component injection moulding, milling, metal deep drawing or any other production method that could reproduce mentioned plug parts. | 20 ; The materials that can be used for the production of the multifunctional plug | parts depend on the embodiment and are for most parts preferably polymers .
like: HDPE, LDPE, PP, POM, PC, PA, PLA or any other suitable plastic which is soft enough not to scratch a touchscreen and stiff enough to be used as a 25 stylus or positioning device. For some embodiment parts like the telescopic plug one could consider materials like metal or even carbon fibre to achieve i higher stiffness and strength with less wall thickness.
Obviously metal parts, unless used as contacts, should not be in contact electrical connector parts in the jack to prevent short circuits or prevent the 30 smartphone from detecting an electrical device being plugged in like headphones. For other parts like; the stylus tip for resistive touchscreens, a positioning tip portion, some grabbing or plug end parts, or the mentioned suction cup and (wide) band strap embodiment, a preferred material choice 21 would be a softer and more elastic material like; (nitrile) rubber, silicone or a thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) where said material can be electrically insulating.
5 In case of a capacitive touchscreen however a conductive and/or magnetic stylus tip surface is necessary in order to function as a stylus. In this case an electrically conductive material or coating can be used like a carbon filled polymer where the polymer carrier is preferably a soft rubber or silicone material. Alternatively the stylus tip for a capacitive touchscreen can also 10 comprise of a smooth and rounded magnetic and/or a metal part which preferably is covered by a polymer to prevent scratching of the touchscreen. This polymer can also be electrically insulating as the capacitive touchscreen is able to discharge through a thin layer of electrically insulating material and/or a (electro) magnetic field is also able to reach the touchscreen through 15 a layer of insulating material. Preferably the conductive stylus tip part also has a bigger tip surface, if possible although not limited to at least 1 mm2, in order for the touchscreen to better detect the tip. Preferably the stylus tip part is also in contact with the fingers holding the plug as to (better) ground the conductive stylus tip part. This can be done by connecting the conductive tip part to a plug 20 end part which at least partially is also made out of a conductive material. In case the conductive stylus tip part is the plug tip part within for instance an audio configured plug, this can be accomplished by using a metal wire or an electrical conductive core part within a non-conductive tubular plug part in order to connect the stylus tip with the plug end part. In case of telescopic 25 inner parts as mentioned in prior embodiments these will preferably be made out of a conducting material and preferably fingers will also touch these parts while holding the plug when using it as a stylus. In case an oblong part is attached to the plug end part and which comprises of a conductive stylus tip, this oblong part could be made at least partially out of a conductive material 30 and the plug part of a non-conductive material.
One can also think of different colours to be used in one or more components of the plug to either make the plug less or more visible or to have similar 22 colours as the portable touchscreen device. One can also use for instance fluorescent materials within the plug to better indicate the stylus tip location in the dark and when touching the screen.
5 One can also think of using the plug surface to put special features or decoration like small diamond resembling stones or logos at the plug end part. One can also put text on the plug surface with instruction information on how to use the plug like; how to enlarge the tip part, pointing out the directions to turn or pull etc.
