Abstract

The construction comprises a top layer (3) of an extremely open material with a void content of at least 10% voids, especially extremely open asphalt concrete, and a row of concrete roadside blocks (9) next to the length edge of the road surface (2), especially next to the top layer. The blocks are designed to allow plants to grow through them and are made from water-permeable concrete material.

Road construction
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The invention relates to a road construction comprising a paved road surface and a paved roadside situated along it.
More and more road surfaces are provided with a top layer with a high water drainage capacity. A well-known example of this is so-called Very Open Asphalt Concrete (ZOAB), an asphalt concrete with a high content of hollow spaces, usually 20%. The advantage of such a material is that in the case of large precipitation the water does not remain on the riding surface for a long time and aqua-planning is prevented, as well as splashing water is prevented.
The water settled in the upper layer can flow sideways, horizontally to the verge, possibly after having first flowed through an emergency lane. If the roadside consists of soil, therefore a soft roadside, the water can usually be absorbed without problems, without impeding the flow through the top layer.
2 0 In rural areas, a desire may arise after a while to lay a paved roadside along the road surface of a motorway as an escape lane or emergency lane. The same wish can arise on motorways if the emergency lane has been given a function as a rush-hour lane and an emergency provision must be realized. To this end, a strip of concrete blocks provided with vertical openings is placed next to the road surface. Such concrete blocks, which can accommodate vegetation through the openings, are also referred to as growth blocks or grass concrete blocks.
A problem can now arise that the concrete blocks on the longitudinal edge of the upper layer form a barrier for the water flowing out through the upper layer, with the result that water can remain on the riding surface longer.
A solution for this has been sought in, for example, laying the roadside concrete blocks 5 cm below the riding surface. However, the disadvantage of this is that the longitudinal side created as a result can pose a danger to vehicles moving with that tire over that longitudinal side. Accidents are then possible.

An object of the invention is to provide an alternative solution to this.
An object of the invention is to provide a safe road construction provided with an open top layer with roadside concrete blocks, with a sufficient water drainage capacity.
From one aspect the invention provides a road construction with a road surface forming one or more roadways with an upper layer of very open material with a hollow space content of 10% or more, in particular very open asphalt concrete (ZOAB), and a the series of roadside concrete blocks connecting the longitudinal edge of the road surface, in particular the top layer, to form a paved roadside strip, wherein the roadside concrete blocks are designed as so-called growth blocks and are made of water-permeable concrete material.
As a result, the roadside concrete blocks located along the longitudinal edge 3 of the upper layer do not form a dense or substantially dense surface for the water flowing through the upper layer. The water can flow through the concrete material itself and does not only have to flow away through the transition between roadside concrete blocks and top layer or through any vertical growth holes present. Water drainage from the road surface is thereby promoted, without the need for level differences between the driving surface and the roadside surface.
It is noted that concrete street vowels 10 are known that are made from a water-permeable concrete material. These vowels are suitable and intended for conventional roadway surfaces, where they only have to let through vertical water. They are not intended for use in roadside paving. They are not provided with 15 growth holes.
The concrete material preferably has a water permeability of more than 50 l / s / ha, preferably of more than 250 l / s / ha, possibly even of more than 500 l / s / ha.
In a water discharge enhancing embodiment, the water permeability of the concrete material and the water permeability of the upper layer approximate each other.
In one embodiment, the roadside concrete blocks extend in a vertical direction to next to a bottom layer located directly below the top layer. The top layer can then drain over its entire height to the roadside concrete blocks.
In one embodiment, the top layer can be multi-layered, with an upper layer and a lower layer, both of which have a cavity content of more than 10%, preferably 20% or more.
The lower layer and upper layer can both comprise a ZOAB. A known embodiment is two-layer ZOAB, in which the top layer is fine ZOAB and the bottom layer is coarse ZOAB.
A geotextile may be located below the roadside concrete blocks, the concrete blocks being able to rest directly on the geotextile.
In the road construction according to the invention, the upper surface of the roadside concrete blocks lies in a plane with the road surface.
From a further aspect the invention provides a roadside concrete block for forming a paved roadside strip, wherein the roadside concrete block is designed as a so-called growth block and is made of water-permeable concrete material.
The concrete material preferably has a water permeability of more than 50 l / s / ha, preferably of more than 250 l / s / ha, optionally even of more than 500 l / s / ha.
The aspects and measures described in this description and claims of the application and / or shown in the drawings of this application can, where possible, also be applied separately from each other. Those individual aspects and other aspects may be the subject of split-off patent applications directed to them. DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
The road construction 1 in figure 1 shows a paving construction 2 comprising an upper layer 3 of, for example, Very Open Asphalt Concrete (ZOAB), an underlying layer of, for example, gravel asphalt concrete and below that a foundation 5 of stone, surrounded / supplemented with soil / earth 6 Along the longitudinal edges 7 of the top layer 3 / bottom layer 4, a roadside hardening 8 is placed, built up from a series of concrete growth blocks or grass concrete blocks 9, placed on a layer of geotextile 10.
The grass concrete blocks 9 are further shown in Figures 5A-C, and can have dimensions of 1 x w x h of 61 x 41 x 12 cm or 40 x 40 x 12 or any other size, for example Ronaton (registered trademark) dressing blocks. The grass concrete blocks 9 are provided with through-holes 11 and are more or less zigzag-shaped along the sides 12a, 12b, 12c and at places spaced apart from each other with a head-relief, in the form of a hollow - respectively dol connections, known per se. In this example, the side 12d is straight so that it can be properly laid against the longitudinal edge 7 of the road pavement 2. The side 12d can optionally also be designed as side 12a, 12b or 12c, wherein drainage-promoting material is then inserted into the against the longitudinal edge Holes 11 can be provided.
The grass concrete blocks 11 can be placed on the geotextile 10 in connection with roadside hardening 8, after which replenishment can take place with soil introduced into the holes 11.

In this example, the roadside concrete blocks 9 are made of concrete B45, wherein the holes 11 define an open space of 13% or more. The fine gravel or stone fraction can be essentially omitted from the aggregates, so that they are mainly formed by moderately coarse gravel (NEN 5104).
The concrete material is composed such that a significant water permeability is provided, in addition to the permeability provided by the holes 11. The water permeability of the concrete material itself can be more than 50 l / s, preferably more than 250 l / s / ha, in particular more than 500 1 / s / ha.
Figure 3 shows an example of a road construction with verge concrete blocks 9, the upper layer 3 consisting of a single layer of ZOAB, with a percentage of hollow space of approximately 20%. The longitudinal edge 7 of this directly connects to the side 12d of the roadside concrete blocks 9.
The layer of ZOAB 3 is placed on an intermediate layer 4 of dense asphalt concrete, which itself is laid on foundation layer 20 of crushed stone or rubble 5. In this example, the layer 3 has a height of, for example, 6 cm and the layer of dense asphalt concrete 4 has a height of 25 cm. Open asphalt concrete can also be used as an intermediate layer, depending on the desired design. The open asphalt concrete can then connect drainingly with the longitudinal edge 25 to the series of roadside concrete blocks according to the invention.
When precipitate P falls on the upper layer 3, it will be absorbed therein by the high percentage of cavities in the layer 3, and as a result of the slope in the direction B, flow down through the layer 3 to the longitudinal edges 7. There the water can flow without difficulty through (C) through the concrete material of the roadside concrete blocks 9, and drop through it or get into the holes 11 and also drop there, eventually flowing downwards through the geotextile 10 (D) into the subsurface soil 6. The soil can also partly consist of drainage materials (rubble).

It can be seen in Figure 3 that the driving surface 15 is flush with the upper surface 16 of the roadside concrete blocks 9.
Figure 4 shows an alternative construction of the road pavement 2, in which use is made of so-called two-layer ZOAB. The upper layer 3 is in this case built up from an upper layer 17 of fine ZOAB, with a height of, for example, 3 cm, and a layer 18 below of coarse ZOAB, of, for example, 5 cm height. Below that layer, an underlayer of dense asphalt concrete 4 can again be provided.
In this case too, precipitate P will be able to flow through the upper layer 3 (B) to the longitudinal edges 7, through the concrete material (C) of the roadside concrete blocks 9, eventually through the geotextile 10 (D) into the soil 6 below.
It is noted that instead of ZOAB, the top layer and possibly layers directly beneath it can also be of a different, highly water-permeable structure.
The above description is included to illustrate the operation of preferred embodiments of the invention, and not to limit the scope of the invention. Starting from the above explanation, many variations will be evident to those skilled in the art that fall within the spirit and scope of the present invention.

Claims (17)

  1. Road construction with a road surface forming one or more roadways with an upper layer of very open material with a hollow space content of 10% or more, in particular very open asphalt concrete (ZOAB), and one on the longitudinal edge 5 of the road surface, in particular the top layer, contiguous series of roadside concrete blocks for forming a hardened roadside strip, wherein the roadside concrete blocks are designed as so-called growth blocks and are made of water-permeable concrete material.
  2. Road construction as claimed in claim 1, wherein the concrete material has a water permeability of more than 50 l / s / ha.
