Description

Werkwijze voor het vervaardigen van een micropakking en micropakking vervaardigd volgens zo een werkwijzeMethod for manufacturing a micro-pack and micro-pack made according to such a method

The invention relates to a method for manufacturing a micropackage. The invention further relates to a micropacking made according to such a method.

The recent years have shown a rapid development of microfluidic systems that are mainly used for (bio) chemical analyzes and syntheses. Such systems 10 comprise, in addition to, for example, sensors for measuring chemical or physical parameters, also hydraulic or pneumatic microcomponents such as pumps, valves, capillaries and channels.

In the connections between the hydraulic or pneumatic microcomponents, the seals can be formed by conventional O-rings. However, these are relatively large and often form unwanted large dead spaces. It has also been proposed to use an eutectic Si / Au, WO 96/25619, and a direct coupling by means of gluing, for example US 5890745. However, the connections thus realized are not detachable, which is desirable or required in many applications. In WO 01/09598 a relatively simple fluid micro-coupling is described in which the end face of a tube is pressed directly onto an elastic sealing layer.

Gaskets can also be applied directly to a surface by means of screen printing, a well-known graphic "push-through" technique in which use is made of a template (stencil) applied to a screen. For example, US 3794333 describes an example of applying an elastomeric gasket to a surface by means of screen printing. In EP 0241192 we find an example of printing a gasket using a stencil. JP 6-117543 gives an example of screen printing of a 2-component foam rubber in which a photolithographically patterned photosensitive layer is applied to the screen. JP 11-2330 describes the screen printing of a packing of varying thickness. EP 0843113 gives another example of printing a gasket. JP 2000-18391 gives yet another example of a foam rubber gasket applied by screen printing. Screen printing, however, has limitations regarding the achievable resolution and the precision in positioning relative to the surface to be 'printed'.

In addition, gaskets can also be applied directly to a surface by inkjet printing or by "writing" with a nozzle. DE 19732144 describes the inkjet printing of a gasket. WO 01/62061 describes the "writing" of a gasket by means of a movable nozzle. JP 2001-4030 describes the application of a patterned foam rubber layer by a similar technique. Furthermore, it is known to manufacture a gasket by photolithographic patterning of a layer provided for this purpose on a surface. In addition, the patterned layer itself serves as a gasket or part thereof. WO 01/25137 describes the application of a photolithographically patterned metal layer which, after coating with a sealing layer, can serve as a gasket. WO 01/25138 describes the manufacture of microfluidic systems in which stencils serve as gaskets. However, the packing material cannot be selected independently because not all layers of material lend themselves to photolithographic patterning. Moreover, during the manufacture of the gasket, material may end up in passages and channels arranged in the substrate, which is often very undesirable. A gasket can thus not be applied to a surface which is already provided with holes and channels. However, this is often a requirement because the realization of passages and channels in the subsurface usually takes place through aggressive processes and chemicals that the gasket cannot withstand or are difficult to protect.

2020

The object of the present invention is to provide a method for applying a micro gasket, with well-defined small dimensions and positioned with great precision, on a surface provided with holes and / or channels, wherein the gasket material can be selected independently, and therefore can be optimized to physical and chemical properties of the micropackage.

To this end, the invention provides a method for manufacturing a micropackage comprising the following steps: A. applying a first layer of a first material to a substrate; B. patterning the first layer into a mold for the micro pack to be formed; C. applying a second material on at least a part of the surface of the substrate that is not covered by the patterned first layer, and D. removing at least a part of the patterned first layer.

For example, a micro pack can be made in which the pack material can be selected independently of the first material used, and optimized to the desired physical and chemical properties of the micro pack. Multiple micropackages can also be manufactured in a single process.

Thereby, a photosensitive material can be taken for the first material and the patterning of the first layer in step B is effected by means of a shadow mask to selectively illuminate and subsequently develop the first layer.

The developed first layer then, possibly after a thermal curing step, forms the mold 10 for the micropackage to be formed. Photolithography is a reliable and well-developed technique for realizing structures with small and well-defined dimensions. For example, very small and thin micro packings can be manufactured with great precision.

A photosensitive film is preferably taken for the photosensitive material, for example a dry film resist such as Riston® or Ordyl®. The photosensitive film forms a uniformly closed surface and closes off passages and channels present in the substrate. This prevents second material from entering these passages and channels during or after application. A gasket can thus be applied to a substrate that is already provided with passages and channels. That is, for reasons mentioned in the foregoing, often a requirement. Moreover, the thickness of the available films, typically 20 to 40 µm, and thus the height of the mold formed, often corresponds well with the desired thickness of the micropack to be formed.

The first layer can also be patterned in step B by etching the first layer with a etching mask. The etched layer then forms the mold for the micro pack to be formed. For site-selective etching, for example, a photolithographically patterned photosensitive layer can be used as an etching mask.

Preferably, an elastomer, preferably in the dissolved state, is used for the second material, the second material hardening after application in step C, preferably by allowing a used solvent to evaporate.

1021264 41021264 4

With a proper choice of elastomer, the gasket formed will exhibit the physical and chemical characteristics desired for a given application such as the required elastic and sealing properties and chemical compatibility and resistance.

The invention also provides a micropacking made according to a method according to any one of the preceding claims.

Such a micro-packing has well-defined dimensions and, when the second material is properly selected, has optimum physical and chemical properties.

The invention is explained below with reference to a non-limiting example of a method according to the invention and a non-limiting example of a device provided with a micropack according to the invention. To that end, figure 1 shows four partial cross-sections which represent stages during the manufacture of a micropack according to the invention, and figure 2 shows a cross-section of a part of a device provided with a micropack according to the invention.

Na verwijderen van de mal 3’ vormt het tweede materiaal 5 een micropakking 1 rondom de doorgang 6, zoals getoond in figuur ld.Figure 1a shows a substrate 2 provided with a passage 6 and a photosensitive film 3 provided on the substrate 2, such as Riston® or Ordyl®. After photolithographic patterning of the photosensitive film 3, a mold 3 "has formed, as shown in Figure 1b. Subsequently, a second material 5 is applied such that the openings 7 in the mold 3 "are filled with the second material 5, as shown in Figure 1c. After removal of the mold 3 ', the second material 5 forms a micropackage 1 around the passage 6, as shown in Figure 1d.

The photosensitive film 3 forms a uniformly closed surface and seals the passage 6 arranged in the substrate 2, and possibly other passages and channels (not shown). This prevents the second material 5 from falling into the passages or channels during or after application. A micropack can thus be applied to a substrate that is already provided with passages and channels. As stated, this is often a requirement because the realization of passages and channels in the substrate usually takes place by means of aggressive processes and chemicals against which the micropackage is not resistant or difficult to protect.

Op de kanalenplaat 12 is middels een werkwijze volgens de uitvinding een micropakking Γ aangebracht welke een 10 afdichting vormt tussen de ingangs-/uitgangsmodule 11 en de kanalenplaat 12.Figure 2 shows a part of such a modularly constructed microsystem 10 comprising an input / output module 11 and a channel plate 12. On the channel plate 12, by means of a method according to the invention, a micropackage Γ is provided which forms a seal between the input / output module 11 and the channel plate 12.
