Description
Cliëntsysteem voor IP-netwerk.Client system for IP network.
The invention relates to a client system, in particular for an IP (Internet Protocol) network. Such a client system comprises a network terminal, for example a PC or NC, which is connected to the network. The network terminal is loaded with client software, often called browser. This allows contact, via the network, with host or server systems that are part of that network or connected to that network. The address (URL) of a document available at such a host or server 10 can be entered via the browser (page). The document received via the browser, usually encoded in HTML code, may contain references (links) to other addresses. A cluster of such pages is called an internet site. The pages may include links to other pages inside or outside the site. Furthermore, the pages can include non-text objects such as figures, moving images, sound and also (small) programs such as JAVA or ACTIVE-X applets.
The browser functions as an agent, which on the one hand represents the user at the server (or host) and, on the other hand, represents the server with the user, in particular for transferring 20 commands (server input) to the server and transferring the user the 'response to this generated by the server (server output).
The processing of output generated by the server usually takes place "manually", by the user, ie the user chooses, by means of his mouse or keyboard, further actions, for instance from a number of options from the last offered by the server page (back to the homepage, downloading software, opening a linked URL, etc.).
The invention provides a client system with advanced capabilities, in particular to support (commercial) loyalty programs. To this end, the client system includes processing modules or agents that ensure automatic processing of the output received from the browser from servers. In particular, it concerns the processing of "bonus points" or other modern forms of cash or value units. It is thereby provided that the requesting of certain services or pages is rewarded 1006951 '2 by sending a number of bonus points to the user, while the requesting of certain other services or pages again costs bonus points. In this way, by debiting or crediting certain services, a loyalty program for internet services 5 can be realized. It is important that the settlement, also with the user, takes place automatically, but is also not susceptible to fraud. For this reason, use is preferably made of the features offered by modern payment cards, chip cards, which can be connected to the client PC by means of a card terminal. The use of a chip card as a storage medium for electronic bonus points solves the fraud problem and also ensures the integration of internet-oriented payment traffic and conventional payment traffic: one and the same chip card can be used in both domains. In addition, 15 bonus points saved via internet promotions can be spent in normal shops, etc. if desired, but bonus points saved via normal trade (shops, petrol pumps, etc.) can also be used for internet transactions. This can also contribute to normal trade seeing Internet trade as a complement rather than a threat.
It is noted that the client system may be housed in a user terminal such as a PC, or at least partly housed in the network environment, either in an access server or in a special server for running 25 loyalty programs, etc. This is explained below. of embodiments set forth differently.
UITVOERINGSVOORBEELDENIMPLEMENTATION EXAMPLES
Men spreekt wel over I-pay, E-cash etc. Teneinde e.e.a. aan de zijde van de gebruikers automatisch en fraude-ongevoelig te laten werken, zijn de terminals 1 voorzien van smart-card stations 6.Figure 1 shows a number of client terminals 1 which can connect to host servers 4 via a communication network 2, such as the public telephone or ISDN network, and an internet access server 3, and the "world wide web", the internet 5. In practice, the number of terminals 1 and host servers 4 that can communicate with each other in this way is very large. Users use their terminal (PC) 1 35 to exchange information with the servers 4. Organizations or enterprises that use the servers 4 to communicate with "the public" can encourage users to purchase or provide information by rewarding the desired "0 ^ 6951 3 actions by sending to users" loyalty points ". On the other hand, organizations or companies can also request payment for services or information to be provided. In both cases this can be done by exchanging electronic value units via the network. One speaks about I-pay, E-cash, etc. In order to have things work automatically and insensitive to fraud on the part of the users, terminals 1 are equipped with smart card stations 6.
Figure 2 schematically shows a possible architecture of terminal 1. Terminal 1, which comprises a CPU, including memory modules, etc., as well as a screen, keyboard and modem, is loaded with IP communication software (Winsock) and client software (browser). In addition, in accordance with the invention, an Accounting Module is loaded, which is functionally connected to the browser, for example as a so-called plug-in. As soon as the browser is confronted with a "financial action", i.e. an action in which the server either sends value elements to the browser or demands electronic value elements from the browser, the accounting module is activated. Typically, the accounting module will ask the user whether 20 value elements to be received can be credited or value elements to be paid depreciated. The medium in which the value elements are stored is formed by smart card, referred to as "Chipper (R)". Such a medium is insensitive to fraud, so that users cannot defraud the value elements. Furthermore, commercial activities via the internet, for example a promotional action, can be very well combined with promotional actions via non-internet channels, such as shops, petrol stations, transport companies, government, etc. The balance of value elements can be read by the accounting module and is displayed on the 30 screen. Different organizations, etc. can use different value elements, each of which is stored separately in the smart card, namely in different memory locations, each intended for the storage of value elements ("loyalty points") of a certain loyalty program, for example SHELL points, bonus points for the use of MICROSOFT products or multi-vendor loyalty points such as "Airmiles" etc. Also, monetary amounts can be exchanged through the memory location in which the smart card registers normal currency.
