Abstract

Animal feedstuff is stored in a silo (6) on the farm where it is to be consumed. The quantity of feed is monitored periodically. Various sensors can be used; illustrated is an ultrasonic transmitter and detector. An output flowmeter can also be used. Signals from one or more silos are collated by a local processor and are connected by a modem and telephone line to the supplier's computer. A critical level triggers a signal to re-order. Silos at neighbouring farms are then interrogated to see if they could also be topped up.
