Abstract

It provides a highly toxic azide-free gas generator composition that minimizes gas filtration problems by changing it to a gas product having only a small amount of solid combustion products upon combustion. It provides a method for safely manufacturing a gas generator. In particular these compositions are suitable for inflating automobile and airplane occupant bondage bags. The present invention seeks to advantageously combine nitrogen containing fuel and phase stabilized ammonium nitrate (PSAN) to produce a high volume of non-toxic gas with only a small amount of solid combustion products.

Claims (16)

  1. An azide-glass gas generator composition for producing exhaust gas upon combustion to inflate an automobile or airplane occupant restraint, comprising: (a) phase stabilized ammonium nitrate (PSAN); (b) Triminoguanidine nitrate, diaminoguanidine nitrate, 3-nitron-1,2,4-triazol-5-one and its salts, uraazoles, triazoles, tetrazole and its salts, oxamides, oxals At least one nitrogenous fuel selected from ildihydrazide, melamine, pyrimidine and mixtures of two or more thereof; (c) said composition which consists of 0-12% of an organic polymer binder.
  2. The gas generator composition of claim 1, wherein the ratio of PSAN to fuel is adjusted such that the amount of oxygen allowed for the equilibrium exhaust is between salt and 3.0% by volume.
  3. 3. The gas generator composition of claim 2, wherein the ratio is such that the amount of oxygen allowed is from zero to about 2.0 volume percent.
  4. The gas generator composition of claim 1, wherein the amount of PSAN is about 50-80% by weight of the composition.
  5. The gas generator composition according to claim 4, wherein the fuel is triaminoguanidine nitrate (TAGN).
  6. The composition of claim 5, comprising: (a) about 64.7 weight percent PSAN; A gas generator composition consisting of a mixture of (b) about 31.77 weight percent TAGN, and (c) about 3.53 weight percent oxamide.
  7. The composition of claim 5, comprising: (a) about 64.90 weight percent PSAN; A gas generator composition consisting of a mixture of (b) about 28.08 weight percent TAGN, and (c) about 7.02 weight percent oxamide.
  8. The composition of claim 5, comprising: (a) about 59.4 weight percent PSAN; A gas generator composition consisting of a mixture of (b) about 32.48 weight percent TAGN, and (c) about 8.12 weight percent guanidine nitrate.
  9. 6. The gas generator composition of claim 5, comprising a mixture of (a) about 60.51 weight percent PSAN and (b) about 39.58 weight percent TAGN.
  10. 6. The gas generator composition of claim 5, comprising a mixture of (a) about 59.30 weight percent PSAN and (b) about 40.70 weight percent TAGN.
  11. 6. The gas generator composition of claim 5, comprising a mixture of (a) about 60.40 weight percent PSAN and (b) about 39.60 weight percent TAGN.
  12. The azide-glass gas of claim 1, wherein the PSAN and fuel are mixed and compressed into pellets and contain about 50-80% by weight of an oxidant such that the burn rate of the pellet composition at combustion is at least 0.3 inches per second at 1000 psi upon combustion. Generator composition.
  13. The gas generator composition according to claim 1, wherein the binder is selected from a polymer consisting of epoxy, polycarbonate, polyester, polyurethane, butadiene, rubber and a mixture of two or more of these polymers.
  14. (a) dissolving the measured amounts of ammonium nitrate and potassium nitrate together in soft water, (b) cooling and drying the solution obtained to obtain dry PSAN, (c) pulverizing the dry PSAN obtained here as a powder and weighing Measuring (d) drying and weighing the fuel containing triaminoguanidine nitrate, (e) mixing the dry PSAN with the dry fuel, (f) pulverizing the powder with the resulting dry mixture, (g) A method for producing the azide-glass gas generator composition according to claim 5, comprising forming the powder into pellets under pressure.
  15. (a) pulverizing a dry mixture obtained by mixing a measured amount of ammonium nitrate and potassium nitrate with wet triaminoguanidine and drying, and (b) forming the powder into pellets under pressure. Process for the preparation of azide-glass gas generator composition.
  16. (a) preparing triaminoguanidine wetted with water or alcohol by a wetting method, (b) mixing a measured amount of dry ammonium nitrate and dry potassium nitrate with a measured amount of triaminoguanidine in a wet gas Obtaining a generator mixture, (c) pulverizing the dried gas generator mixture to obtain a powder, and (d) shaping the powder into pellets under pressure.
