Description

가변 출력 유체 펌프 시스템{VARIABLE OUTPUT FLUID PUMP SYSTEM}Variable output fluid pump system {VARIABLE OUTPUT FLUID PUMP SYSTEM}

Embodiments of the present invention relate to a variable output pump system comprising a fluid pump, specifically a positive displacement pump and a variable speed ratio drive system.

Volumetric pumps are used throughout automotive and industrial applications due to their relatively low overall cost and the packaging space requirements for such pumps. One example is an internal tip sealing gear type pump, commonly known as a generator pump. These pumps (volume generators and their equivalents) are configured to maintain oil temperature under certain conditions (eg, high oil temperature and engine idle rpm), but the same pump without variable speed ratio connections to the engine may be excessive at elevated rpm. Generates oil. To solve this problem, a variable speed drive can be provided. However, current speed variable speed drives are costly and require significant additional packaging space. In addition, volumetric pumps suitable for direct drive are expensive and require significant additional packaging space.

Thus, for volumetric pumps, such as generators, a low cost with drive speed ratios that can be managed as a function of the required inlet pressure and also for long-term continuous duty operation without compromising performance. It is desirable to provide a small variable speed drive.

The use of a plurality of friction members in the clutch pack is desirable to provide the most practical ratio of power consumption to packaging space and cost. Clutches of the state of the art often use engineered friction materials such as paper and / or carbon fiber composites in a resin matrix comprising phenolic resins and the like to obtain good stick-slip properties. These engineered friction materials typically exhibit thermal aging properties that degrade overall performance over time. The clutches of the state of the art also have lubricant grooves that provide fluid communication for the outward flow of heat dissipating lubricant between the hub region space (where the coolant lubricant is most easily introduced) and the space outside of the friction member through which the lubricant exits. An engineered friction material surface friction member includes a smooth steel friction member fitted therein. The area between the grooves containing the engineered friction material is in continuous contact with their smooth relative friction members, thereby promoting the accumulation of heat, thereby resulting in heat aging and a reduction in the residual life. Represents lubricant masking.

The performance of wetted friction members, over time and the stability of friction wear, which are subject to extended periods of high slip speed operation, make it difficult to obtain low component costs because asbestos removes asbestos from products provided for environmental hygiene reasons. Numerous innovative products have been proposed, such as carbon-based and phenolic resin composites reinforced with nanocarbon structures, and developed as friction materials. Many such materials are confined to the surface layer and are therefore subject to changes such as wear corrosion or dissipation of the surface layer.

The transfer of slip related heat from the friction surface to the lubricant of the wet clutch system depends on the lubricant's ability to interact in thermal contact with the friction surface at a flow rate sufficient to rule out local overheating. Conventional means of providing lubricant replenishment to the friction surface, i.e. providing the aforementioned grooves to the friction surface of only one friction member of the two friction member types, reduces the groove flow area by wear over time. And a limitation in the ability to maintain a significant amount of lubricant in cold contact with the friction surface while providing a free flow of lubricant radially outward while being limited by the friction member thickness. It also has the above-mentioned drawback that the frictional contact area itself, ie the area between the lubricant grooves, is itself masked, thereby preventing the free flow of lubricant from making cold contact with the working area where cooling is most needed.

In an exemplary embodiment of the present invention, a first volumetric pump and a pump drive operatively connected to the first volumetric pump are included, wherein the pump drive is configured to cause the first volumetric pump to operate during the first operating range. A pump system having a hydraulic release configured to have a first output profile and to operate with a second output profile during a second operating range, wherein the pump drive is configured to reduce the second output profile as the hydraulic pressure increases. This is provided.

In another example embodiment of the present invention, a variable output pump system having a pressure-regulated slip drive for varying the output of at least one volumetric pump is provided. The pressure regulated slip drive has one or more biasing members for providing a biasing force that causes frictional engagement of at least a pair of engagement surfaces and also has a fluid cavity in fluid communication with the fluid pumped by the pump. The pressure of the fluid in the fluid cavity counters the biasing force of the biasing member to engage the pair of mating surfaces, thereby affecting the magnitude of the torque transferred from one of the mating surfaces to the other, thereby increasing the speed ratio between the mating surfaces and the To influence the output of the pump. The torque transmitted between the mating surfaces is preferably due to Coulomb friction during the startup phase, i.e. before the fluid pressure develops, and then between the physically separated mating surfaces of sufficient area and radius to prevent coulomb friction inherent wear. To viscous oil flim shearing. The bonding surface is preferably formed in an interactive lubricant passageway that allows for continuous repeated flushing of the entire contact area of these members for improved cooling and power dissipation performance.

In another example embodiment, a pressure regulated slip drive is provided for varying the output of the pump, the pressure regulated slip drive moving in a sealed manner causing frictional engagement of at least one pair of engagement surfaces. At least one biasing member for providing a biasing force to the fluid, and a fluid cavity disposed between the pressure bearing member and the surface of the load control member in fluid communication with the fluid pumped by the pump and moving in a sealed manner; The pressure of the fluid in the cavity affects the output of the pump in a similar manner by countering the biasing force of the biasing member to engage the engagement surface.

In another example embodiment, a method is provided for varying the output of a volumetric pump, the method comprising: a contact surface connected to a first pump of a pump system, a mating surface of a pressure-regulated slip drive. Is driven by a pressure regulated slip drive by rotating it in a first direction about an axis, wherein a viscous shear of fluid disposed between the engagement surface and the contact surface connects the engagement surface to the contact surface. step; And reducing the output of the first pump by moving the engagement surface away from the contact surface when the pressure of the fluid pumped by the pump system moves the movable load control member connected to the engagement surface. Include.

In another example embodiment, a method is provided for varying the output of a volumetric pump, the method comprising biasing at least one frictional engagement surface of a pressure regulated slip drive to drive another frictional engagement surface with a biasing force. Biasing toward the frictional engagement of the. The bias force is applied to the load control member moving in a sealed manner. Reversing the bias force exerted on the load control member moving in the sealing manner by the fluid pressure in the fluid cavity disposed between the load control member and the pressure holding member moving in the sealing manner is a frictional engagement of at least two frictional engagement surfaces. This results in a decrease in the amount of bias towards the pump, thereby affecting the output of the pump.

The examples described herein illustrate one aspect of the various features of the invention, which are not to be construed in any way limiting the scope of the invention.

One exemplary embodiment of the present invention relates to a system comprising a low cost slip drive unit for pressure controlled drive of a volumetric oil pump. The slip drive unit utilizes a predetermined axial clamping load applied to the friction drive surface via an elastic biasing member (eg, one or more Belleville disc springs or equivalents). The axial clamping member is driven by hydraulic pressure to overcome the biasing force of the biasing member to allow sliding of the friction drive surface if necessary after a given control pressure has been achieved to limit the pump speed to the speed necessary to maintain the desired pressure. Is reduced.

In an exemplary embodiment, the control pressure may be such that, for example, the balance shaft bearings are used to ensure that the required pressure is available for all components downstream of the flow restriction of the oil filter and components of the flow circuit. from a remote branch of a lubricant network such as a balance shaft bearing. Control hydraulic pressure acts on one or more face areas of the load control member that move axially against a given axial clamping load by applying a pressing force to the elastic member, thereby providing a clamping load applied to the friction drive surface or Proximity of the friction drive surfaces to each other is reduced as a function of control pressure. Controlled slippage causes the volumetric pump to rotate slower than the shaft driving this volumetric pump, i.e. at the speed required to maintain the target pressure, so that despite the fluid viscosity variation, or For example, in the case of fluctuations in engine permeability, such as the opening of piston cooling jets or cycling of variable valve timing camshaft phasers, or when the engine speed exceeds the rate at which sufficient oil pressure develops. The speed ratio of the pump to the drive shaft is self-adjusted to control the system pressure.

Patent Application No. 11 / 110,476, entitled "Device for Controlling Parasitic Losses in a Fluid Pump," which is incorporated herein by reference, uses a self-releasing wrap spring over the outer diameter of the hub. However, this method is actually torque adjusted instead of pressure adjusted as claimed, so it is not reliable to overcome the high startup torque magnitude required to move the oil under cold start conditions.

1 is a pressure-adjusted axial direction that may be used to capture the inner rotor 14 of an example embodiment of the invention, ie in one embodiment a balance shaft-driven gerotor pump. Illustrates a variable output pump system 10 having a force applying slip drive unit 12. The drive illustrated in FIG. 1 lacks an axial "float" and thus captures a minimalist structure that captures the rotor's inner rotor 14 in a substantially fixed axial relationship to the balance shaft. have a minimalist structure. This captured relationship can be useful for synergistic elimination of the balance shaft thrust control face, and the sealing land 16 of the rotor's inner rotor also As much as possible cost savings, there are two duty cycles that provide this functionality. The zero rotor pump in this figure is characterized by a so-called "piloted" inner rotor, the pilot extension 18 of which is in accordance with the illustrated embodiment of the hydraulically adjusted slip drive unit of the present invention. A small diameter end face 20 friction-driven under axial preload in the direction of arrow 22 from a paired Belleville disc spring or any other equivalent biasing device 24. Has The opposite end of the inner rotor of the gerotor is preferably captured by a small diameter shoulder 26 on the drive shaft 28, where the inner rotor, under axial force, has a minimum radius of the sealing area of the inner rotor. Captured between faces of a small area with a smaller diameter. Here, the friction drive face 30 engages with the face (slotted or otherwise) of the exemplary piloted rotor pump when the spring 24 provides a biasing force in the direction of the arrow 22. When oil or fluid is received in the chamber or oil pressure cavity 32 via an oil supply path 34 in fluid communication with the oil pressure cavity, the resulting force in the opposite direction to the arrow 22 is the face 20, 30. ) Causes the pump output to be reduced by forcing (or uncoupling) less forcefully. It should be understood that the force-applying load control member 36 with the friction drive face 30 can be extended to engage the non-piloted gerotor without affecting the spirit of the present invention. The noise, vibration and harness (NVH) benefits of the piloted inner rotor may be naturally obtained by the robustness of the inner rotor's connection to the drive shaft as provided by this extended type of force application unit. As such, the piloted zero rotor avoids the inherent cost and efficiency disadvantages.

If the radially miniaturization of the pressure-adjusted axial force application unit is desired, the friction drive surface on one or both sides of the pump rotor can be conical, so there is a slight manufacturing cost disadvantage for a given axial force. At higher torque capacities are obtained. The use of a conical sheet for connectivity between the drive shaft, slip drive unit, and inner rotor allows the female cone to be placed in the zero earth, preventing additional process costs of extended pilot diameter on the zero rotor. It is preferable. This cone or friction surface, along with the oil supply passages in communication with the oil supply path 34, will be interrupted by a lubricant groove that maintains the overall presence of lubricant in the drive seat or face and the accompanying cooling.

Where a further radial miniaturization of the pressure adjusted axial force application unit is desired, and / or when a larger power handling capacity is required for a given force application unit package size, a plurality of disc clutch pack type friction devices Would be preferred. The friction member (or “clutch disc” or “clutch plate”) is a axial mobility as necessary for the transfer of clamp loads through the pack and / or to allow separation between the friction members. As is known in the art, they are alternately attached to inner and outer anti-rotation features such as splines, flats or lobes. The use of such a plurality of friction members will increase the torque capacity for any given clamping load by increasing the friction radius and also sharing the torque load between more friction surfaces if necessary, thereby requiring the desired torque capacity. It is possible to reduce the proximity of the axial clamping loads or friction drive surfaces to each other. Therefore, the desired clamping load or reduction in proximity can be controlled (or unloaded or reversed) by making the pressure recoil region at a given fluid pressure correspondingly smaller to allow miniaturization in terms of piston diameter. . A plurality of friction interfaces operating at lower clamping forces or proximity may be advantageous in terms of heat transfer as the associated lower contact pressures or increased proximity allows operation by fluid shear force alone rather than requiring actual friction surface contact during slip. Overall stronger. Obtaining these significant performance advantages is from the slip interface against the pump inner rotor itself, to the outer torque transmission member that couples the pump drive sleeve or “inner torque transmission member” in a drive manner, By adding an inner torque transmitting member which is repositioned through a friction member located between them.

2, another embodiment of the present invention is illustrated. Here, the variable output pump system 38 has a pressure regulated drive system 40 that uses a plurality of disk clutch packs to provide torque transfer to the volumetric pump. The pressure adjusted slip drive system 40 comprises an outer torque transmission member 42, which is connected to the drive shaft 44 for positioning and for receiving torque, and is also preferred. Preferably capture one or more bellyville spitting or resilience prompting members 46 (hereinafter referred to as bellyville springs), such that any static force of the resilient preload in the direction of arrow 47 is sealed. Urging the load control member 48 to move in the direction of the arrow 47, such that the moving pressure plate 50 connected outwardly and the at least one axially moving inwardly connected friction member 52 drive the pump to the drive shaft. It is urged toward a fixed pressure plate 56 connected outward to drive 44. In addition, a plurality of axially moving outwardly connected friction members, engagement members or clutch discs 54 are added to the moving pressure plate 50 and the fixed pressure plate 56 to further inwardly connected friction members, engagement members or clutches. Paired with the disk 52, it helps to provide torque transmission when the pressure plate is urged in the direction of the arrow 47.

A fixed pressure plate 56 is positioned relative to the outer torque transmission member 42 to supply a reaction force of the spring preload force as transmitted by the moving pressure plate 50. The moving pressure plate 50 and the fixed pressure plate 56 are interposed with the inwardly connected friction member 52 moving in the axial direction, similarly to the outwardly connected friction member 54 moving in the axial direction when there is an outer torque. It is in a torque transmission relationship with the transmission member 42, preferably in a splined relationship. The axially moving inwardly connected friction member 52 is in a torque transmission relationship, preferably a splined relationship, with the inner torque transmission member or the drive sleeve 58, and also the oil passage between their inner surfaces and Corresponding passageways in their outwardly connected frictional members 50, 56, 54, when present, are formed to allow for overall outward oil flow to provide cooling and contact with relative movement for power consumption and wear resistance. The consistency of the presence of an oil film between the inwardly connected frictional member 52 and the outwardly connected member 50, 56, 54 during presence is ensured.

As illustrated, the oil pressure capture chamber 60 is between a load control member 48 that moves in a sealed manner and a static pressure containing member 62 that is captured in a sealed manner relative to the outer torque transmission member 42. It is formed in, providing an oil pressure recoil zone. The oil pressure entering the oil pressure chamber 60 is arrowed against the load control member 48 moving in a sealed manner to counter any static force of the resilient preload from the one or more bellyville springs 46. (47) Acting in the opposite direction, the inner connected friction member 52 moving in the axial direction between the moving pressure plate 50 and the fixed pressure plate 56 and the outer connected friction member moving in the axial direction when present. To reduce the axial clamp load applied thereto, whereby the axially moving inner connected friction member 52, the moving pressure plate 50, the fixed pressure plate 56 and the axially moving outwardly connected friction present The friction force and torque transmission capacity of the member 54 are reduced, which connects the drive shaft 44 to the inner torque transmission member 58 through the outer torque transmission member 42. The inner torque transmission member 58 is in driving communication with the inner rotor member 64 of the oil pump via one or more drive features 96, which are in contact with the outer rotor member 66 and the outer rotor member 66. The fluid volume from the intake passage (not shown) with the pump housing 68 is transferred to the exhaust passage (not shown). This transfer of fluid capacity typically occurs under pressure when resisted by flow restriction, such as the flow restriction of a consumptive load that requires pressurization, such as the engine's lubricant passageway network.

The sample or “pilot” pressure (hereinafter “control pressure”) to a point upstream of the consumable load or to a point in the consumable load (hereinafter “control pressure”) is preferably a drive shaft 44 which assists in capturing pressure by the plug 74. Is supplied to the oil pressure chamber 60 through a control pressure supply hole 70 and one or more pressure supply cross holes 72. It will be appreciated that the control pressure may be supplied by the non-passive means such as a control device or a pump or through a regulator without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Since the inner torque transmission member 58 is placed in a relative rotational movement with respect to the drive shaft 44 and other members of the slip drive unit (except for the axially moving inwardly connected frictional member 52), this rotational movement The use of pressure seals that are suitable for the is desirable for the sealing mobility required for this. The pressure seal 76 is configured to capture the control pressure for the pressure chamber 60, for example, which is robust against relative rotational movement between the load control member 48 and the inner torque transmission member 58 moving in a sealed manner. One or more pressure transfer passages 78 in the load control member 48 that are disposed and move in a sealed manner through one or more pressure transfer holes 80 for communication of fluid pressure with the pressure chamber 60. Pressurized fluid from the pressure supply cross hole 72 can be received.

The clutch disk array is preferably cooled and lubricated actively through one or more cooling flow cross holes 82 and one or more flow throttling transfer holes 84, which cooling flow radially through the friction surface groove 90. After passing outwards, it is captured, for example, by a pressure seal 86 for escape and also through one or more cooling flow escape holes 88 in a non-limiting embodiment. Unobstructed communication of oil flow between the pressure supply cross hole 72 and the pressure transfer hole 80 and the oil flow between the cooling flow cross hole 82 and the throttle transfer hole 84, respectively, It is preferably guaranteed by local grooves 92 and 94. The preferred friction surface lubricating oil groove 90 can, alternatively or simultaneously, be formed in the friction surface of the frictionally connected friction member, and in the preferred embodiment described below, both types of friction members are used for power consumption capacity and durability. Are slotted interactively to maximize.

The inner torque transmission member 58 preferably includes one or more pump drive features 96, such as face splines or "dogs", which preferably transmit the drive torque without generating an axial reaction force. Drive the oil pump through.

A seal, with the necessary axial mobility between the members that is not subject to relative rotational movement, is preferably provided by the O-ring 65 as illustrated.

Referring to FIG. 3, another exemplary embodiment of the present invention is illustrated, wherein the system includes a pressure regulated slip drive pump and a direct drive displacement pump, each driven by the same drive shaft. The parallel output combination of the disclosed pressure regulated slip drive pump and one or more direct drive volumetric pumps (which are always driven when the drive shaft is rotating) allows the slip drive pump to be virtually uncoupled within routine operating conditions. This provides an opportunity to scale, whereby the system drive torque is reduced to the same as the drive torque of the parallel output direct drive pump, allowing power consumption to be reduced to the maximum possible extent.

The direct drive volumetric pump of this embodiment can be driven by a separate shaft and thus at a non-unit speed ratio relative to the drive shaft of the slip drive pump, alternatively a plurality of direct drive pumps. It will be appreciated that it may include.

Referring to FIG. 4 in yet another exemplary embodiment, one pump is driven directly by the first drive and the other pump applies a torque through the pressure regulated slip drive of the exemplary embodiment of the present invention. A dual pump system driven by a second drive of the invention is provided. As illustrated in FIG. 4, the slip drive unit applies torque to the pump through a single inwardly connected friction member 52 disposed between the moving pressure plate 50 and the fixed pressure plate 56. In another exemplary embodiment, since only two friction surfaces supply torque to the pump, non-limiting examples include a moving pressure plate 50 and an inwardly connected friction member 52 or equivalents thereof. Of course, many other configurations are possible within the spirit of an exemplary embodiment of the invention. In accordance with an exemplary embodiment of the present invention, it should be understood that one pump, whether a slip driven pump or a direct driven pump, can be replaced by a plurality of pumps.

5-11, another exemplary embodiment of the present invention is illustrated. 5 is a cross-sectional view of a slip drive pump of a plurality of pump systems as described above in the embodiment of FIGS. 3 and / or 4. A friction member separation device 98 interposed between the outer parts of the friction members 50, 54, 56 is schematically illustrated. The friction member separating device 98 is radially packaged outside the friction member 52 connected inwardly of the slip drive unit. Of course, other positions are possible within the spirit of an example embodiment of the invention.

During start-up, the Belleville spring pack 46 urges the load control member 48 to hold the friction member together for Coulomb friction-based driving, which is illustrated in the upper half of FIG. 5. . In the lower half of FIG. 5, the load control member 48 is shifted to the left entirely by the pressure captured in the oil pressure chamber 60 to squeeze the Belleville spring pack 46, thereby with the drive shaft 44 of the pump. The clutch pack is released to have the largest representative friction member separation for minimal drive torque transmission between driven elements 64, which separation is illustrated by fluid film gap 100. In the case of this complete disconnection of the slip drive pump of a plurality of pump systems, a one-way check of the discharge passage of the slip drive pump is carried out so that the system pressure cannot escape through the slip drive pump by driving the slip drive pump against the drive direction thereof. Although it is possible to include a valve, another alternative is to engineer the minimum torque transmissibility of the slip drive unit (ie the torque transfer rate of the complete disengagement) to match the torque required to motor drive the slip drive pump in reverse. There is a simple way to prevent the cost of the one-way check valve by design. The minimum value of this torque transfer rate is provided by the limitation on the magnitude of the separation between mating coupling members, thereby limiting the minimum value at which viscous shearing force between the coupling members can be achieved.

This embodiment of FIG. 5 also shows a shorter drive sleeve or inner torque transmission member 58 that can help to reduce manufacturing costs. In this example embodiment in which the pressure seal 76 directly contacts the shaft 44, the pressure transfer hole 80 and preferably the flow throttling transfer hole 84 are removed together with the grooves 92 and 94. . Throttling of the clutch plate coolant flow is preferably provided by the flow throttling annular gap 85 in this exemplary embodiment.

6 illustrates another exemplary embodiment of the present invention. In this embodiment, the interactive voids, through holes, slots or grooves 102, 104, 106, 108 that are at or completely penetrate the relative or opposing surface of the friction members 50, 52, 54, 56. The entirety of the contact area between each adjacent friction member is flushed directly by the lubricant at least once per rotation of the relative movement of the associated friction member. This lubricant allows free unblocked access to these contact areas while outward from the hub space. The placement and shape of these lubricant flow features are engineered to generate uniform-with-radius circumferential contact lengths in the radial direction through an angular sum, in one embodiment, in the radial direction. It ensures a uniform friction member wear rate, and the periodicity of these lubricant flow features is preferably Vernier, and has a boundary shape free from coincidence, so that any sudden change in interaction during their relative rotational movement upon contact ( homogeneous friction member materials, such as 4032 high silicon aluminum alloys, which are preferably interleaved with abrasion resistance (eg, nitrided) alloys, preferably have good thermal conductivity and wear characteristics. Sufficient lightweight mounting of the friction surface through the friction member area and effective radius ensures that all operations are adjacent but not actually contacted after Coulomb friction-dependent startup mode before fluid pressure is available. It can be characterized by viscous film shearing between the friction surfaces. Slip between the friction members during driving by coulomb friction is essentially wear and at least clutch pack preload as the gradually thinning friction member acts to reduce the preload size (or installed pressing force) of the clutch pack actuation spring. Changes in characteristics, such as force, occur essentially. Using viscous film shear forces rather than coulombic friction can cause the friction surface to be substantially free of wear after an initial break-in period to equalize the film thickness across all friction members. Wave springs or other friction member separating device 98 (FIG. 9) is preferably provided as the Belleville clutch pack actuating spring is pressed by an axially moving load control member to release the friction member. To FIG. 11), to evenly expand or substantially to the extent of the gap or film thickness between the friction members.

화살표 103은 서로에 대한 부재(50, 52, 54, 56) 중의 적어도 2개의 부재의 각도 구성으로 인해 부재의 외측 방사 둘레까지 모든 방향으로 연장하지 못하는 오일 흐름 경로를 예시하며, 이들 부재가 서로에 대해 회전할 때, 상이한 흐름 경로(101, 103)가 형성된다(예컨대, 일부는 외측 둘레까지 연장하고(경로 101), 일부는 외측 둘레까지 연장하지 못한다(경로 103)).Exemplary relative friction members 52, 54, 50, 56 preferably have contact areas formed by voids or through holes, which are angled to form an axial helical spinning oil flow path. Interacting in a Vernier fashion, thereby allowing the cooling lubricant to enter the friction surface annular contact region through the radial oil flush slot 102 in the friction member 52 connected inwards and to form a mated outward connection. Directly flushes and cools the exposed areas of the contact surfaces of the friction members 54, 50, 56, but radially outwards across the cross section of the member 52 by passing through the interactive voids 106 in the members 54, 50, 56. To further advance into the friction interface to one or the other side of member 52 (preferably planar but may also be non-planar, such as conical). The. In FIG. 7 a non-limiting path is illustrated by arrow 101. From these sides of the friction interface, the lubricant directly flushes and cools the area of the contact surface of the member 52 exposed by the voids in the members 54, 50, 56. Finally, during the radial escape of the lubricant, the lubricant may once again cross the friction interface to rejoin at one of the notches 104 around the member 52, where the lubricant 54, 50, The other exposed area of 56) is directly flushed and cooled. Arrow 103 illustrates an oil flow path that does not extend in all directions to the outer circumference of the member due to the angular configuration of at least two of the members 50, 52, 54, 56 with respect to each other, and these members do not extend to each other. When rotating relative to each other, different flow paths 101, 103 are formed (eg, some extend to the outer perimeter (path 101) and some do not extend to the outer perimeter (path 103).

The shape and area of an example void or through hole is preferably engineered to maintain a substantially uniform overall arc length in the radial direction of the angular contact in order to produce a uniform wear rate in the radial direction. Although a pierced friction member is illustrated, the outermost friction members 50, 56 in the axial direction of the clutch pack are formed of similarly engineered blind-bottom voids or recesses of projected shape and area. It is thus desirable to prevent unwanted axial escape of the cooling lubricant and underflushing and undercooling of the counterpart of the resulting contact area. Although a pierced friction member is illustrated as being preferred, the novel flow interactive passage allows for direct wetting of the entirety of both sides on the friction member while allowing the lubricant to move radially outward across the boundary between the faces. It will be appreciated that the installation of can be provided by through holes between the boundary surfaces of one or both friction members as well as by unpenetrated voids or recesses in the pair of friction members.

FIG. 7 shows a relative clutch friction member contact region overlapping the friction member of FIG. 6 to show the simultaneous contact pattern illustrated by the hatching line in the circumferential direction in FIG. 7. The contact pattern preferably changes continuously in a vernier manner, in relative rotational motion, through a repeating pattern of two friction members that vary in even-odd fashion. The arc 110 characterized by the various areas of this contact pattern preferably has a corresponding sum of lengths in terms of the angle angled for wear uniformity in the radial direction.

FIG. 8 is a depiction of the total contact area between the two friction plates illustrated in FIG. 7, wherein arc 110 corresponds to the hatching area or contact area (illustrated in FIG. 7) between the two friction members, where Each arc is rotated to remove the gap to illustrate the concept of angular and summation. These example contact patterns, but not entirely, mainly show optimization in terms of angular arc length sum uniformity in the radial direction for significant wear uniformity. The example pattern is only one of a myriad of possibilities, and preferably a novel concept of full flushing of the mating contact surface with a substantially uniform angular contact in the radial direction may be employed.

9 and 9A are views along line 9-9 of FIG. 7 showing at least members 52, 54 in cross-sectional perspective view. 9A illustrates non-cross-sectional views of members 52 and 54.

10 and 11 are partially enlarged views of FIG. 9, in which FIG. 10 illustrates a fluid capture zone C (fluid path 103) and FIG. 11 illustrates a fluid delivery passage P (fluid path 101). It is apparent that the fluid path is merely shown as a non-limiting example.

FIG. 12 illustrates the output of a preferred multiple pump (ie, as illustrated in FIGS. 3-5) embodiment of a pump system with respect to engine speed (eg, engine driving a pump system) and possible energy savings in a non-limiting example. It is a graph illustrating an example. Float 150 represents the output (flow rate in liters per minute) of the slip driven pump. As shown, the output of the slip drive pump will initially increase until the clutch member or member is sufficiently separated (eg, the fluid pressure in cavity 60 is increased) and the output is reduced. Float 160 represents the output (flow rate in liters per minute) of the direct drive pump. As shown, the power of the direct drive pump will gradually increase with respect to engine speed.

Float or line 170 shows the combined output of the slip drive pump and the direct drive pump, while the diagonals of plots 150 and 170 show that the slip drive cannot reduce power when the engine speed increases and the pressure of the fluid in the cavity increases. The output of the slip drive and its composite output are illustrated. The shaded area 180 represents possible energy savings by the slip drive pump system of an exemplary embodiment of the present invention as opposed to the non-slip drive system. While a number of embodiments can be configured to achieve a novel function of pressure control of frictional drive for a volumetric pump, it will be understood that the apparatus described herein is for purposes of illustration and does not limit the scope of the invention. An exemplary embodiment of the present invention modulates a given elastic restoring force downwardly on a friction drive surface in a device used to drive a fluid pump at a variable speed ratio of 1.0 or less relative to the drive shaft as a function of hydraulic pressure. To use hydraulic pressure. Furthermore, one exemplary embodiment of the present invention relates to a variable output pump having a pressure regulated slip drive for use in an internal combustion engine or a balance shaft arrangement for an internal combustion engine.
