Description

텔레비전 시청자 프로파일 제작 방법 및 장치{Method and apparatus for creating a television viewer profile}
텔레비전 시청은 대중적이며, 텔레비전의 방송 초기부터 실질적으로 이용할 수 있는 채널을 여러 개 개발해 왔기 때문에 시청자는 프로그램을 보다 많이 선택할 수 있다. 프로그램 안내는 중요한 시청자 도구(tool)이며, 원하는 프로그램을 효과적으로 선택하는데 있어서 필수적이다.
신문에서 제공하는 프로그램 안내와 같은 지면을 통한 안내(paper guides)는 충분하기는 하지만 많은 단점을 가지고 있다. 이 단점들로서는, 신문이 인쇄되기 전에 프로그램이 변경될 수 있다는 것과, 프로그램들을 독자가 시각적으로 구분하기 어려운 정보량을 제공한다는 것이다. 이용 가능한 프로그램 중 일부에만 관심 있는 독자는 목록 전체를 조사해서 원하는 프로그램을 정해야만 한다. 대안적으로, 전자 프로그램 안내(Electronic Program Guides)("EPG")라는 대안적인 종이 안내가 최근에 개발되었다. 종래 기술의 위와 같은 단점을 감안해서, 본 발명의 목적은 시청자의 시청 행동(viewer's viewing activities)을 조사하고, 시청자가 좋아하는 채널과 시청자가 선호하는 프로그램 범주를 결정하며, 시청자의 시청 선호에 따라 전자 프로그램 안내("EPG") 또는 다른 적절한 안내 시스템의 표시를 구성하는 방법 및 장치에 관한 것이다.
본 발명에 따라, 시청자의 텔레비전 시청 행동을 조사하여 시청자가 선호하는 프로그램을 결정하는 새로운 방법 및 장치를 제공한다. 이 새로운 방법 및 장치는 예를 들어, 시청자 선호(viewer perferences)에 따라 텔레비전의 스크린에 전자 프로그램 안내 정보를 구성하고 표시하며, 특정한 텔레비전 프로그램을 시청하는 시간을 규제하며, 시청자가 선택하는 것을 편리하게 하기 위해 선호하는 프로그램 옵션을 이용해서 자동으로 전환시키며, 관심 있는 정보를 인식해서 인터넷으로부터 제공하는데 사용될 수 있다.

시청자 프로파일이 시청자의 시청 행동을 모니터하고 데이터를 수집하는 시간 주기를 시청자 프로파일 수집 주기라고 한다. 시청자 프로파일 수집 주기는 새로운 시청자 프로파일이 만들어질 때 항상 시작한다. 시청자 프로파일 수집 주기는 예컨대 시청자가 실질적이고 빠르게 시청 선호도를 바꾸면, 시청자의 명령에 응답하여 실증적으로 재초기화될 수 있거나 또는 적합한 시간 간격들(즉 한 달 또는 일년)로 자동적으로 재초기화될 수 있다. 그러나 시청자 프로파일 수집 주기는 재초기화시 종료한다.

어레이(200) 내의 가능한 엔트리(202)들의 수는 제한될 수 있다. 본 발명의 한 실시예에서 그 제한은 이용 가능한 텔레비전 채널들의 퍼센티지, 실증적으로는 10%로 설정된다. 본 발명의 다른 실시예에서 엔트리(202)의 수는 8과 같이, 설정된 수적 제한을 받을 수 있다. 그러나 당업자는 어레이(200) 내의 엔트리(202)의 수를 제한하는 임의의 적합한 수단이 사용될 수 있다는 것을 알 수 있을 것이다.

(시청자 프로파일 어레이의 이용)
도 4는 본 발명의 새로운 시청자 프로파일을 사용하지 않고, 전형적인 전자 프로그램 안내 디스플레이(400)가 어떻게 나타나는지를 도시한다. 디스플레이(400)는, 가능한 텔레비전 채널을 나타내는 행(404)과 시간 주기를 나타내는 열(406)을 갖는 테이블(402)로 구성된다. 행(404)에 사용가능한 채널이 나타나는 순서는 채널 이름을 알파벳으로 표시한다. 도 4에서, 예를 들어, SCI-FI 채널 또는 VH-1을 보기를 원하는 시청자가, 시청자에게 제공되는 선호하는 채널을 알기 위해 전체 테이블(402)을 스크롤 함을 알 수 있다.

    상기 제 1 시청 상태가 상기 시청자 프로파일 리스트에 포함되어 있다면, 상기 제 1 상태의 시간 기간을 상기 시청자 프로파일 리스트에서의 상기 제 1 시청 상태에 대한 총 시청 시간 카운터에 부가하는 단계, 및

    제 1 시청 상태의 지속 기간을 계산하는 수단과,
    상기 제 1 시청 상태가 상기 시청자 프로파일 리스트에 포함되어 있는 지를 결정하는 수단과,
    상기 제 1 시청 상태가 상기 시청자 프로파일 리스트에 포함되어 있다면, 상기 시청자 프로파일 리스트에서의 상기 제 1 시청 상태에 대한 총 시청 시간 카운터에 상기 제 1 상태의 지속 기간을 추가하는 수단, 및
    상기 제 1 시청 상태가 상기 시청자 프로파일 리스트에 포함되어 있지 않다면, 상기 제 1 시청 상태와 상기 제 1 시청 상태의 지속 기간을, 상기 시청자 프로파일 리스트에 추가하는 수단을 구비하는 모니터링 장치.
  8. 제 7 항에 있어서, 상기 제 1 시청 상태가 상기 시청자 프로파일 리스트에 추가되는 것으로 상기 시청자 프로파일 리스트가 충만(full)된다면, 상기 시청자 프로파일 리스트으로부터 적어도 양호한 시청 상태를 제거하는 수단을 더 구비하는 모니터링 장치.
  9. 제 7 항에 있어서,
    상기 제 1 시청 상태의 지속 기간과 소정의 시간 단위를 비교하는 수단과,
    상기 시간 기간이 상기 소정의 시간 단위를 초과하는 경우에, 상기 시청자 프로파일 리스트에 상기 제 1 시청 상태의 지속 기간을 부가하는 수단을 더 구비하는 모니터링 장치.
  10. 제 7 항에 있어서,
    상기 제 1 시청 상태의 지속 기간을, 텔레비전 프로그래밍에서의 소정 개수의 범주에 대응하여, 소정 개수의 범주 지속 기간으로 나누는 수단과,
    상기 제 1 시청 상태가 상기 시청자 프로파일 리스트에 존재한다면, 상기 시청자 프로파일 리스트에서 소정 개수의 대응하는 범주 시청 시간 상수에, 상기 제 1 시청 상태와 상기 제 1 시청 상태의 범주의 지속 기간을 부가하는 수단, 및
    상기 제 1 시청 상태가 상기 시청자 프로파일 리스트에 존재하지 않는다면, 상기 시청자 프로파일 리스트에 대응하는 범주 시청 시간 상수에, 상기 제1 시청 상태의 범주 지속 기간과 상기 제 1 시청 상태를 부가하는 수단을 더 구비하는 모니터링 장치.
  11. 컴퓨터가 시청 행동을 모니터링하도록 지시하는 데에 사용될 수 있는 컴퓨터 판독 가능의 매체에 있어서,
    상기 컴퓨터로 하여금, 소정 개수의 양호한 시청 상태를 저장하는 시청자 프로파일 리스트을 설정하도록 지시하게 하는 수단과,
    상기 컴퓨터로 하여금, 제 1 시청 상태의 시간 기간을 계산하도록 지시하게 하는 수단과,
    상기 컴퓨터로 하여금, 상기 제 1 시청 상태가 상기 시청자 프로파일 리스트에 포함되어 있는 지를 결정하도록 지시하게 하는 수단과,
    상기 제 1 시청 상태가 상기 시청자 프로파일 리스트에 포함되어 있다면, 상기 시청자 프로파일 리스트에서 상기 제 1 시청 상태에 대한 총 시청 시간 카운터에, 상기 제 1 시청 상태의 시간 기간을 추가하도록 상기 컴퓨터에게 지시하는 수단, 및
    상기 제 1 시청 상태가 상기 시청자 프로파일 리스트에 포함되어 있지 않다면, 상기 시청자 프로파일 리스트에, 상기 제 1 시청 상태의 상기 시간 기간과 상기 제 1 시청 상태를 추가하도록 상기 컴퓨터에게 지시하는 수단을 구비하는 컴퓨터 판독 가능의 매체.
  12. 제 11 항에 있어서,
    상기 제 1 시청 상태가 상기 시청자 프로파일 리스트에 추가되는 것으로 상기 시청자 프로파일 리스트이 충만된다면, 상기 시청자 프로파일 리스트으로부터 적어도 양호한 시청 상태를 제거하도록 상기 컴퓨터에게 지시하는 수단을 더 구비하는 컴퓨터 판독 가능의 매체.
  13. 제 11 항에 있어서,
    상기 제 1 시청 상태의 시간 기간과 소정의 시간 단위를 비교하도록 상기 컴퓨터에게 지시하는 수단, 및
    상기 시간 기간이 상기 소정의 시간 단위를 초과하는 경우에만, 상기 시청자 프로파일 리스트에, 상기 제 1 시청 상태의 시간 기간을 부가하도록 상기 컴퓨터에게 지시하는 수단을 더 구비하는 컴퓨터 판독 가능의 매체.
  14. 제 11 항에 있어서,
    상기 제1 시청 상태의 지속 기간을 텔레비전 프로그래밍의 소정수의 범주에 대응하는 소정수의 범주 지속 기간으로 분할하도록 상기 컴퓨터에 지시하는 수단과,
    상기 제1 시청 상태가 상기 시청자 프로파일 목록에 있으면 상기 제1 시청 상태를 상기 시청자 프로파일 목록의 소정의 대응 범주 시청 시간 카운터에 부가하도록 상기 컴퓨터에 지시하는 수단과,
    상기 제1 시청 상태가 상기 시청자 프로파일 목록에 없으면 상기 제1 시청 상태와 상기 제1 시청 상태의 범주 지속 기간을 상기 시청자 프로파일 목록의 대응 범주 시청 시간 카운터에 부가하도록 상기 컴퓨터에 지시하는 수단을 더 포함하는 컴퓨터 판독가능 매체.
  15. 텔레비전의 스크린상에 프로그램 안내 정보를 디스플레이하는 방법으로서,
    시청자의 시청 행동를 모니터링하는 단계와,
    상기 시청자의 상기 시청 행동에 따라 상기 시청자의 적어도 하나의 양호한 시청 상태를 결정하는 단계와,
    상기 시청자의 상기 적어도 하나의 양호한 시청 상태에 따라 상기 프로그램 안내 정보를 형성하는 단계와,
    상기 텔레비전의 스크린상에 상기 형성된 프로그램 안내 정보를 디스플레이하는 단계를 포함하는 프로그램 안내 정보 디스플레이 방법.
  16. 제 15 항에 있어서,
    상기 모니터링하는 단계는
    소정수의 시청 상태를 기억하기 위한 시청자 프로파일 목록을 정하는 단계와,
    제1 시청 상태의 지속 기간을 계산하는 단계와,
    상기 제1 시청 상태가 상기 시청자 프로파일 목록에 포함되는지 여부를 결정하는 단계와,
    상기 제1 시청 상태가 상기 시청자 프로파일 목록에 포함되면 상기 제1 시청 상태의 지속 기간을 상기 시청자 프로파일 목록의 상기 제1 시청 상태에 대한 총 시청 시간 카운터에 부가하는 단계와,
    상기 제1 시청 상태가 상기 시청자 프로파일 목록에 포함되지 않으면 상기 제1 시청 상태와 상기 제1 시청 상태의 상기 지속 기간을 상기 시청자 프로파일 목록에 부가하는 단계를 포함하는 프로그램 안내 정보 디스플레이 방법.
  17. 텔레비전 프로그래밍의 시청 시간을 조절하는 장치로서,
    시청 시간이 조정되는 동안 텔레비전 프로그래밍을 확인하는 수단과,
    상기 확인된 프로그래밍이 시청되는 시간량을 지정하는 수단과,
    상기 시청 시간이 조절되는 동안 시청자의 시청 행동를 모니터링하는 수단과,
    상기 모니터링된 시청 행동에 따라 상기 지정된 시간량 이상 상기 확인된 텔레비전 프로그래밍의 시청을 방비하는 수단을 포함하는 텔레비전 프로그래밍 시청 시간 조절 장치.
  18. 텔레비전의 스크린상에 인터넷 정보를 디스플레이하는 방법으로서,
    시청자의 시청 행동를 모니터링하는 단계와,
    상기 시청자의 상기 시청 행동에 따라 상기 시청자의 적어도 하나의 양호한 시청 상태를 결정하는 단계와,
    상기 시청자의 상기 적어도 하나의 양호한 시청 상태에 따라 상기 인터넷 정보를 얻는 단계와,
    상기 인터넷으로부터 얻은 정보를 텔레비전의 상기 스크린상에 디스플레이하는 단계를 포함하는 인터넷 정보 디스플레이 방법.
  19. 제 18 항에 있어서,
    상기 모니터링하는 단계는
    소정수의 시청 상태를 기억하기 위한 시청자 프로파일 목록을 정하는 단계와,
    제1 시청 상태의 지속 기간을 계산하는 단계와,
    상기 제1 시청 상태가 상기 시청자 프로파일 목록에 포함되어 있는지 여부를 결정하는 단계와,
    상기 제1 시청 상태가 상기 시청자 프로파일 목록에 포함되면 상기 제1 시청 상태의 지속 기간을 상기 시청자 프로파일 목록의 상기 제1 시청 상태에 대한 시청 시간 카운터에 부가하는 단계와,
    상기 제1 시청 상태가 상기 시청자 프로파일 목록에 포함되지 않으면 상기 제1 시청 상태와 상기 제1 시청 상태의 상기 지속 기간을 상기 시청자 프로파일 목록에 부가하는 단계를 포함하는 인터넷 정보 디스플레이 방법.
  20. 텔레비전에 결합하는데 적합한 셋톱 유닛에서, 텔레비전의 스크린상에 프로그램 안내 정보를 디스플레이하는 장치에 있어서,
    상기 장치는 시청자 채널 선택권을 결정하기 위해 텔레비전 시청 행동를 모니터링하는 수단을 포함하고,
    상기 모니터링 수단은,
    소정수의 양호한 채널들을 기억하기 위해 시청자 프로파일 목록을 정하는 수단과,
    제1 채널이 시청되는 동안 지속 기간을 계산하는 수단과,
    상기 제1 채널이 상기 시청자 프로파일 목록에 포함되는지 여부를 결정하는 수단과,
    상기 제1 채널이 상기 시청자 프로파일 목록에 포함되어 있으면 상기 제1 채널이 시청되는 지속 기간을 상기 시청자 프로파일 목록의 상기 제1 채널에 대한 총 시청 시간 카운터에 부가하는 수단과,
    상기 제1 채널이 상기 시청자 프로파일 목록에 포함되어 있지 않으면 상기 제1 채널과 상기 제1 채널이 시청되는 지속 기간을 상기 시청자 프로파일 목록에 부가하는 수단과,
    상기 시청자의 상기 시청 행동에 따라 상기 시청자의 양호한 채널들을 결정하는 수단과,
    상기 시청자의 상기 양호한 채널들에 따라 프로그램 안내 정보를 형성하는 수단과,
    상기 텔레비전의 스크린상에 상기 형성된 프로그램 안내 정보를 디스플레이하는 수단을 포함하는 프로그램 안내 정보 디스플레이 장치.
  21. 제 20 항에 있어서,
    상기 모니터링 수단은,
    상기 제1 채널이 시청되는 지속 기간을 텔레비전 프로그래밍의 소정수의 범주에 대응하는 소정수의 범주 지속 기간으로 분할하는 수단과,
    상기 제1 채널이 상기 시청자 프로파일 목록에 있으면 상기 제1 채널의 범주 지속 기간을 상기 시청자 프로파일 목록의 소정수의 대응 범주 시청 시간 카운터에 부가하는 수단과,
    상기 제1 채널이 상기 시청자 프로파일 목록에 없으면 상기 제1 채널과 상기 제1 채널의 범주 지속 기간을 상기 시청자 프로파일 목록의 소정수의 대응 범주 시청 시간 카운터에 부가하는 수단을 더 포함하는 프로그램 안내 정보 디스플레이 장치.
