Abstract

PURPOSE: An in plane switching mode LCD rotates liquid crystal molecules inside the respective domain in the opposite direction each other, thereby improving the viewing angle characteristic by compensating for the gray scale inversion. CONSTITUTION: One of pixel is divided into two vertically-arranged domains. The alignment direction of the first alignment layer in the first domain(I) is rotated in the counterclockwise direction by a theta_R1 from the Y axis, the extension direction of a data electrode(8) and a common electrode(9). The alignment direction of the first alignment layer in the second domain(II) is rotated in the clockwise direction by a theta_R2 from the Y axis, the extension direction of the data electrode(8) and the common electrode(9). In case the electric field isn't applied to the two electrodes(8,9), liquid crystal molecules(35,36) of the respective domains(I,II) are arranged according to the alignment direction decided from the respective domains(I,II) and the alignment direction of the second alignment layer is equal to that of the first alignment layer in the untwisted structure. In case the electric field is applied to the two electrodes(8,9), the liquid crystal molecules(35,36) of the respective domains(I,II) are rotated in the opposite direction each other.

Description

Transverse electric field liquid crystal display device

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION 1. Field of the Invention The present invention relates to a liquid crystal display device, and more particularly, to a transverse electric field type liquid crystal display device having improved viewing angle characteristics by preventing color conversion and grayscale inversion.

Recently, a large area has been strongly demanded in thin film transistor liquid crystal displays (TFT LCDs), which are widely used in portable televisions and notebook computers. However, the above-described TFT LCDs have a problem in that contrast ratio is changed depending on the viewing angle. In order to solve this problem, various liquid crystal display devices, such as a twisted nematic liquid crystal display device equipped with an optical compensation plate, a multi-domain liquid crystal display device, and the like have been proposed. However, it is difficult to solve such a problem that the contrast ratio is lowered and the color is changed according to the viewing angle with various liquid crystal display devices.

Other liquid crystal display devices in the in-plane switching mode, which are proposed to realize a wide viewing angle, have been proposed in JAPAN DISPLAY 92 P547, ASIA DISPALY 95 P707, and the like.

1 is a view showing the operation of the liquid crystal molecules in the conventional transverse electric field type liquid crystal display device, Figure 2 is a view showing the long axis direction of the liquid crystal molecules. As shown in the figure, the extending direction of the data electrode 8 and the common electrode 9 forms an angle θ EL = 90 ° with the X-axis (extension direction of the gate wiring), between the two electrodes 8, 9. The direction of the generated electric field forms the X axis and the angle θ E = 180 °. The orientation direction determined by the alignment film by the alignment treatment step is determined so that the angle formed with the X axis is in the range of 90 ° <θ R <180 ° or 0 ° <θ R <90 °. Rot represents the angle at which the liquid crystal molecules 35 are rotated by the transverse electric field between the electrodes 8 and 9.

When no voltage is applied, the liquid crystal molecules 35 are arranged along the alignment direction by an alignment energy of the alignment layer. When a voltage is applied to the two electrodes 8 and 9, a transverse electric field is generated in a direction perpendicular to the extending direction of the two electrodes 8 and 9 so that the liquid crystal molecules 35 are arranged along the transverse electric field. That is, the liquid crystal molecules 35 rotate counterclockwise by θ rot by the application of voltage. In the figure, dotted lines indicate liquid crystal molecules when voltage is not applied and solid lines indicate liquid crystal molecules when voltage is applied. The driving of the liquid crystal molecules described above uses a P (positive) type liquid crystal whose dielectric constant in the major axis direction is larger than the dielectric constant in the short axis direction. Side by side with

However, the transverse electric field type liquid crystal display device configured as described above has the following problems.

That is, in the direction in which the liquid crystal molecules 35 rotate by θ rot in the counterclockwise direction when voltage is applied, as shown in FIG. 6A, not only the gray scale inversion region due to the birefringence of the liquid crystal molecules but also is shown in FIG. 7A. Likewise, the white color has a problem in that the image quality is deteriorated because color conversion to blue and yellow occurs in the viewing angle directions of A and B, respectively.

The liquid crystal layer is injected between the first substrate 10 and the second substrate 11 in a vacuum state to form the liquid crystal layer 30.

FIG. 4 is a diagram showing the driving of liquid crystal molecules in the first embodiment of the present invention, and FIG. 5 is a diagram showing the major axis direction of the liquid crystal molecules shown in FIG. Although not shown in FIG. 3, the characteristics of the present embodiment are divided into two domains in which one pixel is arranged in the vertical direction as shown in FIG. 4, and the alignment direction is determined so that the liquid crystal molecules in each domain rotate in opposite directions. It is. In FIG. 4, for convenience of explanation, only one data electrode 8 and one common electrode 9 are shown in one pixel. However, in the general transverse electric field type liquid crystal display, as shown in FIG. And a common electrode 9 are formed. As shown in FIG. 5, the extending directions of the data electrode 8 and the common electrode 9 form an angle (θ EL = 90 °) with the X axis. In the upper first domain I, the alignment direction of the first alignment layer 23a is inclined at an angle θ R1 in the counterclockwise direction with respect to the Y axis which is the extending direction of the two electrodes 8 and 9, and the lower direction In 2 domain (II), the orientation direction of the 1st alignment film 23a is inclined by the angle (theta) R2 clockwise with respect to the Y-axis. θ rot1 and θ rot2 represent rotated angles of the liquid crystal molecules 35 and 36 in the first and second domains, respectively, and θ E represents the direction of the electric field when a voltage is applied.

When no voltage is applied to the two electrodes 8 and 9, the liquid crystal molecules 35 and 36 of the first domain and the second domain are arranged along the direction determined in each domain. This embodiment shows a case where a P-type liquid crystal is used, and determines that the orientation directions in each domain are 45 ° ≦ θ R1 ≦ 90 °, 45 ° ≦ θ R2 ≦ 90 °. In contrast, in the case of using an N-type liquid crystal, the orientation direction is determined at 0 ° ≦ θ R1 ≦ 45 ° and 0 ° ≦ θ R2 ≦ 45 °. The present embodiment is for a transverse electric field type liquid crystal display device having an untwisted structure, and the alignment direction in the second alignment layer 23b has the same alignment direction as that of the first alignment layer 23a. For the twisted structure, the alignment direction of the second alignment layer 23b and the alignment direction of the first alignment layer 23a have an angle, for example, the angle between 90 °.

When a voltage is applied to the two electrodes 8 and 9 to generate a transverse electric field, the liquid crystal molecules 35 and 36 are arranged along the transverse electric field so that the liquid crystal molecules 35 and 36 are arranged in the first domain and the second domain. Rotate by | θ rot1 | and | θ rot2 | in opposite directions. In the figure, liquid crystal molecules before voltage is applied are shown by dotted lines, and liquid crystal molecules after voltage are applied by a solid line.

As described above, since the liquid crystal molecules 35 and 36 in each domain rotate in opposite directions, the gray level inversion is compensated for each other, thereby improving the viewing angle characteristic of the liquid crystal display. 6A is a diagram illustrating viewing angle characteristics of a conventional transverse electric field type liquid crystal display device, and FIG. 6B is a diagram illustrating viewing angle characteristics of a transverse electric field type liquid crystal display device according to the present invention. In FIG. 6A, the hatched portion represents the viewing angle region where gray scale inversion occurs. As shown in the figure, gray scale inversion occurs between 90 ° and 180 ° and between 270 ° and 0 ° in the conventional transverse electric field type liquid crystal display device. However, in the present invention shown in FIG. Able to know. Therefore, the viewing angle characteristic is improved as compared with the conventional transverse electric field type liquid crystal display device.

7A is a view showing color coordinates in a conventional transverse electric field liquid crystal display device, and FIG. 7B is a view showing color coordinates in a transverse electric field liquid crystal display device according to the present invention. As shown in the figure, conventionally, color conversion of white color occurs in the range of about (0.27, 0.30) to (0.34, 0.41). However, in the liquid crystal display device according to the present invention, as shown in the drawing, it can be seen that the color conversion of the white color is significantly reduced in each viewing angle direction. Of course, although not shown in the drawings, the degree of color conversion of the present invention is also reduced in the color conversion of red, green, and blue.

FIG. 8 is a view showing a second embodiment according to the present invention, in which one pixel is divided into two domains arranged in the left and right directions, and the alignment directions in each of them are different from each other with respect to the extending direction of the two electrodes 8 and 9. It is inclined in the opposite direction.

9 is a view showing a third embodiment according to the present invention, in which one pixel is divided into four domains, and the orientation directions in the above two domains are opposite to each other with respect to the extension directions of the two electrodes 8 and 9. Direction is inclined, and the orientation directions in the lower two domains are also inclined in opposite directions with respect to the extending direction of the two electrodes 8 and 9. At this time, since the two domains on the left side and the two domains on the right side are inclined in opposite directions with respect to the extension direction, the viewing angle dependence of each other is compensated, thereby preventing color conversion and grayscale inversion.

In the transverse electric field type liquid crystal display device according to the present invention as described above, one pixel is divided into a plurality of domains, and half of the plurality of domains have an alignment direction inclined clockwise with respect to the extension direction of the data electrode. The other half has an orientation inclined counterclockwise with respect to the direction of extension of the data electrode. At this time, it is preferable to determine the orientation direction inclined clockwise and the orientation direction inclined counterclockwise with respect to the extension direction of the data electrode.

FIG. 10 is a view showing a fourth embodiment according to the present invention, in which the alignment directions of two adjacent pixels are inclined in opposite directions with respect to the extending directions of the two electrodes 8 and 9.

It is also possible to determine that one half of the plurality of adjacent pixels has an orientation direction inclined clockwise with respect to the extension direction of the data electrode, and the other half has an orientation direction inclined counterclockwise with respect to the extension direction. For example, it is also possible to determine that two of the four adjacent pixels have an orientation inclined clockwise with respect to the extension direction, and the other two pixels have an orientation inclined counterclockwise with respect to the extension direction. Do.

As described above, the present invention reverses the rotation directions of liquid crystal molecules in pixels or the rotation directions of liquid crystal molecules in pixels adjacent to each other, thereby compensating gradation inversion due to birefringence of the liquid crystal. Therefore, not only the viewing angle characteristic is improved but also color conversion can be prevented from occurring according to each viewing angle.
