CONSTITUTION:A homopolymer of maleic acid or maleic anhydride and a copolymer of maleic acid or maleic anhydride with isobutylene are added to a water system. The polymers are adsorbed on the surfaces of scalelike crystals of calcium carbonate in the water system and of magnesium silicate, calcium silicate, etc., especially in a high silica water system to inhibit the growth of the crystals and to change the state of the surfaces, so the adhesion of scale is effectively prevented.
