Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain the titled element composed of an org. compd. having the excellent nonlinearity by providing a plane waveguide structure formed by the monomolecular film of a specified styrene derivative compd. or its laminated film, on the titled element. CONSTITUTION:The molecular structure having the property capable of forming the monomolecular film on a water surface is realized by adding the excellent nonlinearity due to the part of the styrene derivative compd. except the part of -COOR2 and the hydrophobic property due to an alkyl chain (R2), to the molecular structure having the hydrophilic property due to an ester part. The waveguide structure is formed by laminating the monomolecular film having said molecular structure on a substrate plate. In formula I, R1 is an electron accepting group, R2 is a straight chain alkyl group shown by the formula CnH2n+1 [wherein (n) is 5-25]. Thus, the titled element utilizing the excellent nonlinearity in the molecular level of an org. nonlinear optical material is obtd.
