Abstract

PURPOSE: To realize a high-quality color display by arranging materials, which have dielectric constant different from each other by display picture elements, between transparent electrode and a liquid crystal layer. CONSTITUTION: Transparent conductive films 9 to 11 of an electrode substrate 1 and transparent conductive films 17 to 19 of an electrode substrate 2 are arranged orthogonally to each other to form a matrix electrode structure. Insulating films 12 to 14 which correspond to arrangement positions of color filter layers 6 and 7 with a molecular orientation film 15 between them are arranged between transparent conductive films 9 to 11 and a liquid crystal layer 3. With respect to the voltage-transmittance characteristic of wavelength of R, G, and B, the apparent threshold of the voltage is higher in order of R → G → B. For the purpose of correcting this difference in transmittance to uniformize the characteristics, dielectric constants or thickness of insulating films 12 to 14 are so set that a larger voltage is applied in order of R → G → B by respective picture elements. Thus, transmittances for wavelength of R, G, and B are equalized.
