Abstract
PURPOSE:To achieve sufficiently lean air-fuel ratio including control under warming by detecting intensity of light in a cylinder combustion chamber then controlling fuel supply quantity or ignition timing based on a peak intensity or peak occurring timing. CONSTITUTION:Combustion light fed from a combustion light detecting end of an optical fiber incorporating ignition plug 1 is converted through a photoelectric converter 40 into an electrical signal which is then fed to a control unit 10. The control unit to receives signals from a throttle sensor 6, an air flow sensor 9, a water temperature sensor 3, a crank angle sensor 4, etc., to determine an optimal fuel injection quantity and an optimal ignition timing and output a control signal. Since peak level of combustion light in a combustion chamber and occurring timing thereof vary according to fuel supply quantity or ignition timing, fuel supply quantity and ignition timing are controlled such that an optical operating condition is maintained at all times. Consequently, sufficiently lean air-fuel ratio can be achieved even during warming of engine regardless of individual difference of engine or aging thereof, resulting in a good combustion.
