Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a high-toughness coating material excellent in strength and chipping resistance by providing a film on the surface of sintered alloy consisting of a hard phase such as metallic carbide and a bonding phase of Ni or Co, and imparting high compressive stress on the surface part of the hard phase or the film. CONSTITUTION:Sintered alloy is formed from at least one kind of hard phase selected from among carbide, nitride, carboxide, nitroxide and boride of 4a, 5a, 6a metals in the periodic table and mutual solid solutions thereof, a bonding phase consisting of Ni and/or Co as a main component and an inevitable impurity. A film such as SiC and diamond is formed on the surface of this sintered alloy by a chemical deposition method. Strong impact force is exerted on the coated surface of the sintered alloy by a shot-peening method. Thereby the hard phase and/or the film existing on the surface part of the sintered alloy has compressive stress not less than 50kg/mm<2> and preferably both not less than 100kg/mm<2>. Thereby adhesion of the film is made excellent and the high- toughness coating material having high strength and flaw resistance is obtained.
