Abstract

PURPOSE: To attain reduction in the amounts of expensive components and to improve the nonmagnetism and hot workability, by reducing the amount of Ni as compared with SUS 316 steel and adding specified amounts of Cr, Mn, Cu, N, Ca and B without adding Mo.
CONSTITUTION: The compsn. of an austenitic stainless steel is composed of, by weight, ≤0.15% C, ≤1.5% Si, 0.5W6.0% Mn, 17W23% Cr, 10W15% Ni, 0.1W3.0% Cu, 0.02W0.20% N, 0.001W0.020% in total of Ca and rare earth metals and/or 0.0005W0.015% B and the balance Fe. In the steel, Cr, N, etc., provide high strength, nonmagnetism and working stability but the grain boundaries are remarkably hot embrittled by impurities such as S, so the hot workability is improved by the addition of Ca, rare earth metals and B which nearly prevent the segregation of impurities on the grain boundaries and do not deteriorate the nonmagnetism or working stability.
