Abstract

PURPOSE: To control heating and to easily improve the residual stress in a metal tube by fitting a sound wave sensor to the outside of the tube filled with cooling water, heating the surface of the tube and detecting the state of steam generated by the heating.
CONSTITUTION: A sound wave sensor 9 is fitted to the outside of a metal tube 2, the tube 2 is filled with cooling water and the surface of the tube 2 is heated with a heating means 7. A change in value detected by the sensor 9 due to steam generated by the heating is monitored and a temp. difference producing thermal stress which corresponds to the yield point or above is caused between the inside and outside of the wall of the tube 2.
