One method is to install a detector near the document reading position, but it interferes with reading and is difficult, so as a practical method, it is necessary to install a detector near the document reading position. A micro-switch is installed at , and this micro-switch detects the start and end edges of the document, converts the document travel time to the document information reading position, and sends the start and end edges of the document to the information reading position as shown in Figure 1. A mechanical method is used.

From the time when the starting edge of the original P reaches the micro switch 6 and the micro switch 6 is turned ON by the starting edge of the original P, the driving frequency of the pulse motor 7 that sends the original P and the frequency from the micro switch 6 to the information reading position 2 are determined. The pulse motor 7 is operated for the time width calculated based on the distance between the document P and the document P, and the starting edge of the document P is sent to the information reading position 2, and is transmitted in the aligned state.

As shown in FIG. 3a, this document detection light source 15 outputs an output signal that is much higher than the white background level and roller background level of the document when the document read by the image sensor is not at the reading position. In this way, the light is turned on with a brightness stronger than the white background level or the roller background level of the original to increase the margin for identifying the presence or absence of the original. In addition, using a single wave light source with the same wavelength (infrared region) as the peak of the image sensor's spectral sensitivity,
When turned on under the above conditions, it can be separated from the light source in the visible light range that irradiates the document, is safe, and does not require power because it is the same as the peak wavelength of the image sensor.

Note that the document detection in this embodiment has been explained as the detection of the brightness of light in direct current lighting, but this document detection light source is further turned on at an arbitrary oscillation frequency, and its value is determined from the signal obtained from the image sensor. The document detection signal shown in FIG. 5 can also be obtained by detecting the lighting frequency using a frequency-voltage converter or the like.

As described above, on the document scanning line imaged on the image sensor 33 (reading position), one or more light sources are installed on the back side of the document at the document reading position, and the light source is placed above the document white background level and the roller background level. Alternatively, a light source with the same wavelength as the peak of the spectral sensitivity of the image sensor is provided, the light is turned on under the same conditions as described above, and the image sensor detects the brightness. By turning on and off the blocked light, it is possible to detect the document in real time.

1. A reading means consisting of an image sensor that optically converts document surface information into an electrical signal, a lens, and a light source for irradiating the document reading surface is provided, one or more point light sources are divided in the main scanning direction and embedded in a fixed roller, Further, a detection light source unit is provided with a rotating roller that is rotatably installed on the fixed roller and divided in the reading main scanning direction without interfering with passage of the point light source light, and the document imaged on the image sensor. The point light source is provided on the back side of the original at the reading position, and the point light source is turned on at a brightness much higher than the original white background level or the roller background level, and the light level is detected by a comparator from the signal output of the image sensor. a conversion circuit corresponding to each point light source that extracts a signal from each point light source installed on the roller and converts it into a parallel signal; and a delay circuit that delays the output of each of the conversion circuits by one scan time or more and within two scan times. , a document detecting device that detects a starting edge to a trailing edge of a document by combining the outputs of each of the delay circuits.
