Abstract

PURPOSE: To apply a contact medium such as water uniformly regardless of the attitude of a material to be inspected by spraying the contact medium over the surface of the material to be inspected in advance.
CONSTITUTION: The contact medium 3 is sprayed over the material 1 to be inspected which is laid sideways by using an atomizer in advance and then the contact medium 3 sticks on the surface 11 of the material 1 to be inspected in particulates 31 by surface tension. For the purpose, an ultrasonic probe 4 is scanned downward in contact with the surface 11 and then particulates 31 of the contact medium 3 are crushed to form a thin film 32 of the contact medium 3 between the probe 4 and the surface 11 of the material 1 to be inspected. Thus, an excellent acoustic coupling state is obtained and an ultrasonic wave can be propagated. In this way, the surface of the material to be inspected which is laid sideways or downward is coated uniformly with the contact medium having low viscosity, and the operation is performed efficiently.
