Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a matrix switch of light by a simple method by using magnetic fluid which partially fills light guides and spaces partly facing a magnetic field generating device for driving the magnetic fluid as a constituting element.
CONSTITUTION: The magnetic fluid 4 is prepd. by adsorbing a surfactant to the surface of an ultra-paramagnetic material having about 100Å diameter and dispersing the same in a soln. For example, Fe2O4, ferrite, Fe, Co, Ni and the alloys thereof are used as the compsn. of the magnetic material. The fluid 4 moves so as to minimize the energy of the space when a magnetic field is impressed to this magnetic fluid 4. The magnetic field for moving the fluid 4 is generated by passing current to conductors 2. The magnetic field is hardly generated in the space between the conductors 2 as the magnetic lines of force generated by the current negate each other when the current of the same direction is passed to the adjacent conductors 2 shown in the figure. The magnetic lines of force generated by the current are added to the space between the two conductors 2 and the strong magnetic field is generated when the current of the reverse direction is passed to the adjacent conductors 2.
