Abstract

PURPOSE: To negate an optical phase difference and to obtain high contrast by providing an optical element which is deviated in the optical axis direction and has the optical anisotropy different from the optical anisotropy of a liquid crystal between one polarizing film and a substrate at the type of forming a negative type display device by providing polarizing films respectively to the outside of the substrates sandwiching the nematic liquid crystal.
CONSTITUTION: Electrodes 2A are provided on the opposite surface of one substrate 1A and the entire surface including said electrodes is coated with an oriented film 3A. Electrodes 2B and a light shielding film 4 are arrayed on the opposite surface of the other substrate 1B facing said substrate and the entire surface including said electrodes and film is coated with an oriented film 3B. A nematic liquid crystal layer 6 is sealed between the substrates 1A and 1B while the periphery thereof is sealed by a sealing material 5. The polarizing films 7A and 7B are thereafter disposed respectively on the outside surfaces of the substrates. The optical element 8 of calcite, sapphire, etc., which has 0W30° angle in the optical axis direction from the direction perpendicular to the substrates and has the optical anisotropy different in code from the optical anisotropy of the liquid crystal is interposed between the substrate 1A and the polarizing film 7A at this time. Visibility is thereby enhanced and the formation of various kinds of color elements is permitted.
