Abstract

PURPOSE:To reduce variation of the connection loss of optical fibers even after fitting and removing (connecting) operations are repeated so that stable connection performance can be maintained for a long period, by constituting a connector which connects the optical fibers of a matching sleeve made of zirconia ceramics. CONSTITUTION:A matching sleeve 20 which is the important part of this connector is formed in the shape of a pipe and ferrules, into which optical fibers are respectively inserted and fixed, are inserted into the internal space 21 of the sleeve 20 from both opened ends of the sleeve 20, but the inner wall surface 22 forming the internal space 21 is extremely precisely polished and a slit 23 for producing elasticity in the axial direction is provided. Zirconia ceramics is especially selected to constitute the sleeve 20 out of various kinds of ceramic materials. The surface roughness, inner diameter, and outer diameter of the inner wall surface 22 of the matching sleeve 20 are appropriately set so as to give holding forces to the ferrules. Therefore, scratches and deformation are hardly produced and the connection performance does not decline due to a drop in the holding force or a change in quality of the material even if the connector is used for a long period.

As described above, the matching sleeve 2, which forms the main part of the connector, is mainly made of a copper alloy such as phosphor bronze, and the material for forming the ferrule 2 is mainly ceramic or stainless steel. When connecting optical fibers using such a p-connector, in order to minimize the optical connection loss, the deviation between the fibers F+ and Fz should be kept to about 1 μm or less, and the deviation in the end face angles of the fibers F, , F should be kept to 0. In order to make the angle less than 5 degrees, extremely high accuracy is required in terms of surface roughness, straightness, and roundness of the inner wall surface of the sleeve 2.

However, when the matching sleeve is made of phosphor bronze as described above, when inserting the ferrule, scratches may occur on the inner wall surface of the matching sleeve due to adhesion or contamination of the ferrule, or the insertion angle may be incorrect. This may cause deformation of the alignment sleeve, and if it is repeatedly attached and detached over a long period of time, the retaining force of the alignment sleeve may decrease, and if it is exposed to air for a long period of time, the inner wall surface may become deformed. There is a strong possibility that the above-mentioned phenomena, such as the formation of an oxide film, may degrade connection performance or significantly impair stability, either singly or in combination.

In this way, zirconia ceramic is approximately 6 times harder than Rin S, and therefore has a higher hardness than the peeling powder of the nickel plating applied to the connector casing and the dust that scatters and gets mixed in. Therefore, it is difficult for the inner wall surface 22 of the alignment sleeve 20 to suffer from scratches and the accompanying wear. In addition, the Young's modulus of zirconia ceramic is approximately 1.5 times higher than that of phosphor bronze. As for the coefficient of zero-order linear expansion, zirconia ceramic is approximately 0 times higher than that of phosphor bronze.
.. It is six times smaller, so the alignment sleeve 20 made of zirconia ceramic has a stable holding force against temperature. Further, since zirconia ceramic is an oxide, it is not oxidized in the air and has high corrosion resistance, so that no physical or chemical changes occur on the surface of the inner wall surface 22 of the matching sleeve 20.

Due to the above characteristics, by setting the surface roughness, inner diameter, and outer diameter dimensions of the inner wall surface 22 of the alignment sleeve 20, the inserted ferrule is provided with a holding force, and as a result, it is difficult to cause scratches and deformation, and can be used for a long period of time. However, the connection performance will not deteriorate due to a decrease in holding force or deterioration of quality.

Next, Fig. 4 shows the surface roughness of the inner wall surface 22 of the matching sleeve 20 made of zirconia ceramic which has been polished to a mirror-like finish using the above-mentioned shape, and the conventional matching sleeve made of phosphor bronze has been polished to a mirror-like finish. Figure 5 shows a comparative example of the inner wall surface. In this way, the casing was set in each matching sleeve made of zirconia ceramic and phosphor copper with each surface roughness, and the optical fiber connection test was repeated under the same conditions as the ceramic ferrule was attached and detached. The results are as follows. It is shown in FIGS. 6 and 7.

As shown in Fig. 6, the variation in optical connection loss when using a zirconia ceramic matching sleeve is similar to that of the conventional phosphor bronze matching sleeve (Fig. 7).
The degree of variation was approximately 1/3 of that of the variation, which was extremely stable.

According to the present invention, the connector for connecting optical fibers is constructed with a matching sleeve made of zirconia ceramic, so there is no damage or wear caused by the attachment and detachment of the ferrule, and the ferrule is not deformed by insertion during connection. The retaining force of the sleeve remains unchanged even after repeated attachment and detachment over a long period of time, and there is no formation of an oxide film on the inner wall surface of the sleeve even when exposed to air for a long period of time. ) It is possible to provide an optical fiber connector that has little variation in connection loss even after repeated operations and has stable connection performance over a long period of time.
