Abstract

PURPOSE: To continuously manufacture coke with high productivity, by continuously forming a compression-molded coal of specified dimensions based on the characteristic values indicating the coking properties of coal, obtained with a device for direct observation of a carbonization process, continuously feeding the compression-molded coal into a carbonization oven to effect carbonization, and discharging coke.
CONSTITUTION: A direct observation of a process for carbonization of a compression-molded coal with a device wherein a soft-infrared transmitting unit is connected to the measuring mechanism gives the following characteristic values indicating the coking properties of coal: the height, width, and sectional area of a specimen before carbonization; the height, width, and sectional area of the specimen after a softened layer has disappeared. When a square root of the height, width or sectional area of a specimen before carbonization is 10, and a square root of the height, width or sectional area of the specimen after a softened layer has disappeared is 11, a coal powder is prepared by mixing coal in such a manner that the ratio 11/10 is less than the ratio of the width W1 of a carbonization chamber to the width W2 of a compression-molded coal. This mixed coal either in a wet state or after drying and preheating at 100W400°C is continuously formed with compression molding equipment into a compression-molded coal of a size to give a space of 1mm or greater between the wall of a carbonization chamber and the coal. This molded coal is fed into a vertical continuous carbonization oven, wherein it is carbonized while being moved continuously or discontinuously, and the produced coke is discharged, thus accomplishing continuous carbonization of coal.
