Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain aluminum silicate in high production efficiency, by blending aluminum sulfate and alumina hydrate as Al2O3 sources with SiO2 source, drying the blend, heat-treating, grinding, classifying and especially carrying out fine powder effectively.
CONSTITUTION: An aqueous solution containing aluminum sulfate having a low impurity content in an amount to give 3W70wt.% alumina and alumina monohydrate in an amount to give 97W30wt.% alumina as Al2O3 sources are uniformly blended with silica powder or silica gel as a SiO2 source. The silica powder used has preferably ≥100m2/g specific surface area. The prepared blended slurry is dried at 80W160°C, heated to ≥700°C, aluminum sulfate is thermally decomposed and the resulting material is heat-treated to form mullite as a main mineral. Further the reaction product is ground and classified to give aluminum silicate having a composition of 15W35wt.% SiO2 and 85W65wt.% Al2O3, ≥5m2/g specific surface area and ≤5μm particle diameter.
