Abstract

PURPOSE: To improve read accuracy by a simple constitution by using laser beam which spreads linearly by a cylindrical concaved lens as a light source.
CONSTITUTION: An HeNe laser beam emission part 1 and the cylindrical concaved lens 2 are so arranged that the laser beam 20 is incident orthogonally on an axis 50. Consequently, the laser beam 20 generated by the light emission part 1 irradiates an article by the lens 2 as divergent light 21 which spreads linearly. Reflected light 22 generated by reflecting this divergent light 21 by a bar code label 3 passes through a red filter 6 and is received by a linear image sensor 4 and read out by a demodulation part 5, and then converted by a bar width signal, which is inputted to a POS terminal equipment. Further, a filter 6 allows only the laser beam to be light-received. The divergent light from the lens 2 is a linear light source which does not contain a component parallel to the axis, so irregular reflection on the surface of the label 3 is reduced and the distance range of distance from a readable label surface increases, so that a read is made without contacting.
