Abstract

PURPOSE:To increase the utilization of nickel hydroxide by forming a non- sintered cathode plate for alkaline storage battery with powdered nickel hydroxide active material and powdered cobalt hydroxide having a specified surface area. CONSTITUTION:Powdered nickel hydroxide having a mean particle size of about 3-5mu and powdered cobalt hydroxide having a mean particle size of about 1.5mu and a BET surface area of about 10-20m<2>/g are mixed and filled in the pores of nickel fiber body to form a plate. By using this plate as a cathode plate, an alkaline storage battery such as nickel-cadmium battery is formed. By limiting the surface area to 20m<2>/g or less, the chemical stability of cobalt hydroxide is increased and conversion of divelent cobalt hydroxide into trivalent one during storage is retarded. THe utilization of nickel hydroxide and its filling capability are increased and the cathode plate having high volume efficiency can be obtained.
