Abstract

PURPOSE: To prevent upper and lower two stage piston rings dividing the above- identified engine into an expansion chamber and a compression chamber, from fluttering, by providing the directivity in the direction in which the piston rings go away from each other or in the direction in which the piston rings approaches together, with the use of a seal directivity applying means.
CONSTITUTION: The above-identified engine is composed of a heater 1, a regener ator 2, a cooler 3, a displacer 4, a power piston, etc. and the inside of a cylinder 11 is divided into an expansion chamber 9 and a compression chamber 10 by means of a seal mechanism disposed in the displacer 4. The seal mechanism is composed of plane rings 12 through 15, inner rings 16, 17 disposed in the inside thereof, and tension rings 18, 19 disposed in the inside of the inner rings, for urging the plane rings outward. In this arrangement, several cutouts 30 are intermittently formed in the opposing surfaces of the upper and lower stage inner rings 16, 17, thereby the directivity of sealing is effected during the eleva tion of the displacer 4, to enhance the sealing capability of the seal mechanism.
