Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a disk substrate which substantially satisfies all the conditions necessary for the substrate by working a molded precursor formed by thermal molding of a prescribed resin to a disk, then carbonizing and calcining the disk and polishing the carbonized disk surface.
CONSTITUTION: The molded precursor is formed by thermal molding of a phenol formaldehyde resin and at least one kind selected from thermosetting resins except said resin and thermoplastic resins, carbides and inorg. fillers. After the precursor is worked to the disk, the disk is carbonized by carbonization and calcination. The surface of such disk is polished to obtain the magnetic disk substrate consisting of the glassy carbon. The mixing ratio of the additives to the phenol formaldehyde resin is 0W60 parts per 100 parts phenol formaldehyde resin in the case of the thermosetting resins, thermoplastic resin and carbides and is 0W40 parts in the case of the inorg. fillers.
