Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain an image pickup device having always a good image pickup characteristic regardless of the intensity of incident light, by controlling the intensity of light made incident on a photoelectric transducer using a layer possible to change electrically the transmission factor of the light.
CONSTITUTION: The light is made incident on a solid-state image pickup element 7 through a lens 1 and a liquid crystal panel 6. The solid-state image pickup element 7 is driven by a driving circuit, and an output from the solid-state image pickup element 7 becomes a video signal output with a signal processing circuit 5. The signal processing circuit 5 also outputs a voltage corresponding to the average output of the solid-state image pickup element 7, and it is impressed between electrodes in the liquid crystal panel 8. The liquid crystal panel 6 has an impression voltage dependency with the transmission factor shown in figure. When the voltage corresponding to the average output of the solid-state image pickup element 7 is impressed on the liquid crystal panel 6 from the signal processing circuit 5, the transmission factor of the liquid crystal panel 6 is varied according to the characteristic shown in figure. When strong light is made incident on the solid-state image pickup element 7, the average output is increased, therefore, the voltage impressed on the liquid crystal panel 6 is increased, and the transmission factor is decreased, thereby, a force to weaken the intensity of the light made incident on the solid-state image pickup element 7 is functioned.
