Abstract

PURPOSE: The reaction of an alkylphenylcarbinol is carried out in the presence of a trace amount of sulfuric acid catalyst to produce the titled compound in high selectivity over a long period of time, maintaining the stabilized reaction without deterioration of catalyst activity and deposition of by-products.
CONSTITUTION: The dehydration reaction of an alkylphenylcarbinol is carried out in the presence of 0.008W0.15pt.wt. preferably 0.01W0.1pt.wt. of conc. sulfuric acid per 100pts.wt. of the carbinol at 110W200°C, preferably 130W180°C under a pressure of 500mmHgW2kg/cm2G or at normal pressure to give the objective compound. The alkylphenylcarbinol is, e.g., methylphenylcarbinol or di methylphenylcarbinol. The dehydration reaction is effected in an apparatus from which the water formed in the reaction can be removed.
