Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound useful as an optical resolution agent in agricultural and pharmaceutical fields under mild condition in high yield and purity, by reducing an oxime compound produced by the reaction of a 1-phenylethanone compound with a hydroxylamine compound.
CONSTITUTION: A 1-phenylethanone compound of formula I (R1 is H or lower alkyl) is made to react with a hydroxylamine compound of formula H2NOR2 (R2 is H, alkyl or aralkyl) to obtain an oxime compound of formula II, which is converted to the objective compound of formula III by catalytic hydrogenation reaction with hydrogen gas in a solvent such as methanol in the presence of a catalyst (e.g. palladium supported on activated carbon) at a temperature between -10°C and the boiling point of the solvent. The reduction may be performed by the use of a metal hydride.
