Abstract

PURPOSE:To easily and effectively obtain a battery having high capacity and good high rate discharge performance by forming the whole or part of an electrode in a lengthy direction of an electrode without impregnating active material in almost the same thickness as a part impregnated with active material, and compressing in a width direction of the electrode to form a dense layer of foam metal. CONSTITUTION:In case of a sealed nickel-cadmium storage battery, an active material mainly comprising nickel hydroxide is impregnated in a foam metal having a porosity of about 95%. The active material is impregnated only in a part 1 shown in the figure and is not impregnated in the ports 2, 4. The non-impregnated parts 2, 4 are compressed in a thickness direction and a width direction as shown in X in the figure to form a dense part in which no active material is impregnated. It is combined with a paste type cadmium negative electrode and a separator to form a plate group. The plate group is spirally wound and inserted into a case, then a lead piece 5 is welded to the dense part 2 of the foam metal and an SC size sealed nickel-cadmium storage battery is formed.
