Abstract

PURPOSE: To detect the lifetime of an ink ribbon and prevent printing quality from being lowered, by bringing an opposing pair of an ultrasonic wave emitter and an ultrasonic wave receiver into contact with an ink ribbon, and detecting the frequency or the propagation velocity of a signal propagated through the ink ribbon.
CONSTITUTION: A wave emitter 2 is disposed in contact with one side of an ink ribbon 1, while a wave receiver 3 is disposed in contact with the other side of the ink ribbon 1 at a position opposite to the emitter 2. An ultrasonic wave emitted from the emitter 2 is propagated through the ink ribbon 1 to reach the receiver 3, where it is converted into an electrical signal, which is sent through a received sound amplifying part 11 to a detecting part 10, where detection is conducted. An output from the detecting part 10 is sent to a pulse controlling part 7 through a malfunction-preventing part 9. An abnormal condition detecting means 12 outputs a signal to an alarm means 14 when frequency components of a signal outputted from the detecting part 10 go out of a predetermined range, whereby a buzzer 15 of the alarm means 14 is operated.
