Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound which is a raw material for various chemicals in high yield, by reacting isoprene with carbon monoxide and an alcohol in the presence of a cobalt catalyst and an aromatic tertiary amine.
CONSTITUTION: Isoprene is reacted with carbon monoxie and an alcohol, preferably a 1W12C aliphatic alcohol in the presence of a cobalt compound catalyst, e.g. Co2(CO)8, and an aromatic tertiary amine to give the aimed 4-methyl-3- pentenoic acid ester. In case the cobalt compound is used as the catalyst, the process is of advantage over palladium catalyst from the viewpoint of the cost and stability of the catalyst. The amount of the catalyst to be used is within 0.0005W0.1, preferably 0.005W0.05 range based on the molar amount of the isoprene expressed in terms of cobalt atom mol. Methanol can be used as the alcohol, and a good yield can be produced. The molar amount of the alcohol to be used is preferably within 1W10 times range that of the isoprene.
