CONSTITUTION:In this device, carriages 4a, 4b are stopped at positions other than the notched parts 10a, 10b of the controlling shaft 9 at non-printing time. At this time, the shaft 9 is at a lower position, and the thermal heads 7a, 7b are retracted from the platen 1. When the shaft 9 is moved upward, the heads 7a, 7b are turned clockwise together with the carriages 4a, 4b, with a guide shaft 4 as a fulcrum, and are brought into contact with the platen 1 through a recording paper 2 and an ink ribbon. When printing by only one of the thermal heads, the head not used for printing, for example 7a, is moved to the position of the notched part 10a together with the carriage 4a. Thereafter, the shaft 9 is moved upward, whereby only the thermal head 7b is brought into contact with the platen 1.
