Abstract

PURPOSE:To form a photomagnetic recording element having excellent durability and a high S/N ratio by coating a recording layer with a thin, transparent and hard carbon film so that a stable protective film can be formed without the variance in the film quality. CONSTITUTION:The recording layer is coated with the thin, transparent and hard carbon film. The 'thin, transparent and hard carbon film' itself is known and is also referred to as diamond-like carbon (thin) film, i-carbon, low vapor synthesized diamond film or thin, hard and insulating carbonaceous film and has 1.8-2.4 refractive index. An ion beam vapor deposition method, RF plasma CVD method, etc. are used as a process for manufacture. The satisfactory film thickness is generally 100-10,000Angstrom and the optical film thickness is made 1/4 wavelength or approximate thereto when an increase in Kerr effect is desired to be expected.
