Abstract
PURPOSE:To effectively suppress hydrogen gas evolution in long continuous charging at low temperature by forming a cadmium anode for alkaline storage battery by holding active material in a substrate obtained by covering the surface of a metal base with indium. CONSTITUTION:The surface of base metal such as punched metal is covered with indium by plating or immersing the base metal in an indium dispersion to form a substrate. A paste-like active material prepared by adding hydroxypropyle cellulose serving as binder to a mixture of cadmium oxide powder and metallic cadmium powder is filled in the substrate to form a cadmium anode used for alkaline storage battery such as nickel-cadmium battery. Since hydrogen overvoltage of indium is large and resistance caused by the binder existing between the substrate and active material is decreased, hydrogen gas evolution is effectively suppressed.
