Abstract

PURPOSE: To detect sizes in both directions of an original easily with a high precision by providing a carriage with a detecting means which is driven in the direction orthogonal to moving direction of the carriage and consists of a pair of a light emitting element and a photodetector.
CONSTITUTION: When an original G is set on a basis of the center part of a fixed scale 21 and an original cover 11 is closed, a microswitch 140 is turned on when the original cover is turned up to an opening angle θ1, and a light emitting element 131a is lit, and the first carriage 411 is moved in the direction of the fixed scale 21 in the same speed as the return operation for normal copying. When a light emitting part 131 and a light receiving part 132 reach a point D2 and the light irradiated from the light emitting part 131 is reflected on the original G and is made incident on the light receiving part 132, the light emitting part 131 and the light receiving part 132 are moved in such direc tion that they go away from the base end part of the original cover 11. When the light emitting part 131 gets off the edge part of the original G, a photodetec tor 132a is turned off again. Thus, sizes in the (x) direction and the (y) direction of the original are detected simultaneously.
