Generally, in order to obtain a six-dimensional effect with prior art designs, the observer must position his or her head correctly relative to a viewing position, wear filters or light modulating glasses, or attach a helmet or display. Requires similar headgear to be fitted. The discomfort and inconvenience caused to the viewer by using a variety of such conventional devices, especially when compared with the comfort of viewing provided by standard television (CRT) display devices, has led to widespread acceptance of such devices. It is a cause of obstruction.

Additionally, conventional stereoscopic devices provide images of low quality compared to standard television display devices. for example,
Some devices used color separation techniques to display a red and green image to each observer's left and right eyes. Such a device design results in images with unnatural colors. In addition, there are devices that display stereoscopic images using optical photometry technology. With such a design, a polarizing filter, especially when the filter is worn as glasses, displays a confusing double image due to the movement of the observer's head, making it non-functional.

In other techniques, a set of light modulating filters is placed in front of the observer's eyes. These two light modulation filters work in conjunction with a display device, typically a single cathode ray tube (CRT), adapted to obtain the corresponding left and right images required for stereoscopic display, changing from transparent to opaque. changed alternately. Such a method or its implementation produces a remarkable 7Ritsuka effect.

The analog-to-digital converter 83 inputs one channel of video signals from the stereoscopic camera 81, converts this video signal into a digital signal, and sends it to a computer, ie, a microprocessor 87 via an output 86. computer 87
stores the video signal of the stereoscopic camera 81 in a random access memory. The digitized video signal is stored in the memory of the computer 87 in a form that provides a digitally reconstructed image of the object and viewer occupying the stereoscopic image area 70. The information stored in memory is updated with new video once every television frame time. Each bit word in memory is located approximately 6.6 times in front of display lens 82.

Digital interpolation processing techniques are used to detect and position the observer image from the digitized stereoscopic field 70 data.1 The digitized reference face stored in a read-only memory array is The data of the three-dimensional image area 70 are compared for each element. The correlation level between the reference facial images in the stereoscopic image area of each block is calculated from this element-by-element comparison.

If the correlation levels of all blocks do not exceed a predetermined minimum level, it is determined that the center of the observer's image does not coincide within this image block 1, and then a new image block is selected for comparison. After selecting an image block, a pattern is determined under the control of the computer 87 and all parts of the image in the stereoscopic image area T1 are examined according to the standard.

If any image block exceeds a predetermined minimum value, the computer 87 determines that the center of the observer's image coincides with the vicinity of the center of the image block. Next, correlation calculations are performed for all neighborhoods of the image block. Correlation levels are compared to locate local high correlation points within the memory array. The memory block position where such maximum correlation occurs represents the center of the observer's image and is stored in the memory of the computer 87. After determining the position of the observer image, the computer 87 switches to the correlation mode and further searches for the observer image with respect to the observer image in the viewing area of the portion where the positioning of the observer image is not known. All search correlation processing is performed at second priority.

The storage location of each observer image recognized by the search correlation process is updated by the correlation tracking program. The correlation tracking program is executed with first priority in the computer 8, and performs correlation calculations of image blocks in the immediate vicinity of each previously determined observer position. Compare the correlation levels and calculate updated observer positions for each observer. When the correlation level becomes lower than a preset minimum level, it is determined that the observer is no longer in the viewing area, and the observer position is deleted from the observation position list. Tracking calculations for each viewer are performed once for each television frame.

Processor 84 is used to measure the distance from each viewer to display lens 82. These measurements can be performed because the configuration of the stereoscopic camera 81 allows two different video signals to be obtained from which scene range information can be extracted. The optical axes of the two stereoscopic cameras 81 are offset by a predetermined distance, and the stereoscopic viewing areas 70 are viewed differently, so the video signals of the two stereoscopic cameras 81 are different. Such perspective differences indicate the need to time-delay one video signal relative to the other. This time delay varies as a function of the distance 3 between the stereoscopic camera 81 and the target position imaged by the stereoscopic camera 81.

Processor 84 receives an observer position signal from computer 8T via input 90. These position signals are used to set the gate of the input signal from the stereoscopic camera 81. , each scan line of that portion output from the two camera video channels is a video signal representative of the facial image of the observer and is input into an analog processing delay and correlation circuit. The video signals of the three-dimensional camera 81 inputted from the first channel are branched into five delay lines each having a different delay for these video signals. As a result, the five video signals of the first channel/channel are each delayed and correlated with respect to the video signal of the second channel. When the viewer is more than 12 feet from the display lens 82, the correlation level between the first channel's minimum time delay video signal and the second channel's video signal is equal to the second channel's video signal. This is higher than the correlation level between the video signal and the other four delayed video signals of the first channel. Each of these five time delays is selected to obtain maximum correlation between the video signals of the stereoscopic camera 81 when the viewer is within different predetermined ranges from the display lens 82.

It should be noted that one confusing situation arises with the device described above. The display lens 8 is arranged so that the first observer looks directly over the head of the second observer at the display lens 82.
2, the illustrated device is unable to display a stereoscopic image to both viewers. Such a design drawback is caused by the aperture control means 9
Although the complexity of the liquid crystal display device forming 2 and 93 increases, it is solvable. That is, a two-dimensional matrix of liquid crystal display elements is required.
