Abstract

PURPOSE:To make improvements in ignitionability and fuel comsumption by means of lean combustion, by forming a first combustion chamber on the top of a piston at just under an ignition plug and a fuel injection valve as well as forming an annular second combustion chamber around the former via a squish area. CONSTITUTION:On the top of a piston 3, a semispherical concavity 11 is formed in place just under an almost central ignition plug 5 and a fuel injection valve 6, and likewise annular concavity 11 is formed around the former via squish area 12. And, a first combustion chamber 14 is formed in position between the concavity 13 and a cylinder head 2 while a second combustion chamber 15 is formed between the concavity 13 and the cylinder head 2 respectively. With this constitution, at a compression stroke, a swirl in time of suction is left behind ample enough inside the second combustion chamber 15 whereby the flame ignited at the combustion chamber 14 is speedily propagated to a thin airfuel mixture in the second combustion chamber 15 owing to a squish effect by the squish area, thus efficient combustion is made securable.
