Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a memory state without using optical bistability and to enable control with the light alone by the constitution wherein the electric field between the electrodes for controlling a full reflection type photoswitch is applied by the electromotive force of a pair of photo voltaic elements irradiated with light. CONSTITUTION:Optical waveguides 2, 3, photo voltaic elements 11, 12 consisting of diagonally vapor-deposited CdTe and Al electrodes 8-10 are provided on a lithium niobate substrate 1. When no electric fields are applied between the electrodes 8 and 9 or 9 and 10, the light which is made incident from a light input terminal 4 propagates in the waveguide 2 and emits from a light output terminal 5. When the 1st control light is irradiated to the element 11, the electric field is applied between the electrodes 8, 9 and 9, 10 by the electromotive force thereof and the light entered from the terminal 4 by the fluctuation in the refractive index near the electrode 9 is fully reflected by the bondary of the region where the refractive index fluctuates. The reflected light emits to a light output terminal 7. When the 2nd control light is irradiated to the element 12, the electric field differing in polarity is applied between the electrodes 8, 9 and 9, 10, by which the memory state is released.
