Abstract

PURPOSE:To detect the cracked flaws on the surface of hot slab as sufficient images, by arranging a linear light source in the direction perpendicular to the moving direction of the slab so that the central axis is shifted to the direction of the main axis of an image pickup device and the moving direction of the slab. CONSTITUTION:A linear light source 14 is constituted by, e.g., a long halogen electric lamp, in the direction perpendicular to the moving direction of slab 3. The linear light source 14 is not contacted with the main axis of an image pickup device 12, in a triangular space, which is surrounded by the outer surfaces of a first upper roll 8a and a second upper roll 8b and a surface to be checked 19 of the slab 3. The linear light source 14 is arranged at the position where the light from the linear light source 14 does not directly reach the image pickup device 12. The surface 19 of the hot slab 3 made by a continuous casting method is illuminated by the linear light source 14, and the distirubtion of luminance of the surface 19 is measured. The illuminance ratio between the illuminance of the surface 19 and the illuminance of the bottom surface of the cracked flaw yielded in the slab is obtained. Thus both of the flaws in parallel with the moving direction of the slab 3 and the flaws in the perpendicular direction thereto can be detected.
