Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a switching system for optical waveguides which is high in speed and rational by driving the multilayered piezoelectric medium provided in a part of the optical waveguides in combination with an optical integrated circuit. CONSTITUTION:Slab optical waveguides 21-1-21-3,- of an optical integrated circuit formed on a plate body 20 are connected to plural branch optical fiber waveguides 24-1-24-8, and a main optical fiber waveguide 14 having a movable end 11-2 and a stationary end 11-1 on a movable piece 15 is provided in contact with the end faces thereof. When a voltage is impressed to the electrode 18-1- 18-3,- of sheet-like piezoelectric bodies 16-1-16-3,- from a control voltage source 26, a multilayered piezoelectric laminate 17 is stretched. Then the movable end 11-2 moves longitudinally together with the piece 15 against leaf springs 25-1, 25-2 and switches the light propagated between the main waveguide 14 and the branch waveguide 24. Since the laminate 17 moves at a high speed, the high speed and rational switching system for optical waveguides is obtd.
