Abstract

PURPOSE:To detect a relative speed with high precision even when a transmit and a receive wave vary in inclination by detecting the difference in frequency between receive signals of two receivers installed at different positions. CONSTITUTION:A transmitter 11 transmits an ultrasonic transmit wave at an inclination theta to in front of a vehicle, and the receivers 12 and 13 are installed almost at the same position with and in front of the transmitter 11, respectively. Then, reflected ultrasonic waves from a road surface G, i.e. an ultrasonic wave traveling at the inclination theta to in front of the vehicle and an ultrasonic wave traveling at the inclination theta to behind the vehicle are received by the receivers 12 and 13. The frequency difference between both receive signals corresponding to their relative speed by Doppler effect is detected by a frequency difference detector 18 by subtraction to cancel error components due to the up/ down oscillation of the vehicle body. A nose-up and a nose-down case are the same, and the precise relative speed is detected without reference to whether the transmit and receive waves vary in inclination.
