Abstract

PURPOSE:To decrease the number of component parts with reduction of size for an optical head and at the same time to obtain a stable servo signal having high resistance to the change with time, by using a split prism that divides the light given from the radiation surface into two parts in terms of space to transmit one of these two divided beams and to reflect totally the other beam in the direction different from the transmitted light. CONSTITUTION:A light beam (a) radiated from a semiconductor laser is reflected by a polarized beam splitter 4 and passes through a lambda/4 plate 5 with its optical path turned toward an optical disk 9 to form a minute optical spot X on the disk 9 through a diaphragm lens 7. The reflected light (b) of the disk 9 passes through the lens 7 and the plate 5 and then the splitter 4 and is made incident to a split prism 20. The light (b) passed through the splitter 4 is divided into two beams in terms of space. That is, the left half of the beam (b) is totally reflected to the right side to be turned into a beam (c) and made incident to a focus detector 14. While the right half of the beam (b) passes through the prism 20 to be turned into a beam (d) and made incident to a tracking detector 13.
