Abstract

PURPOSE:To simply set up and lay down a composite sail, by rotatably supporting an upper hard sail at a free end of a lower hard sail. CONSTITUTION:An upper hard sail 6 is formed with a longitudinally extending recess 8 on one surface thereof so as to receive an extended portion 7 of a lower hard sail 5 therein. A hinge 10 is provided at a free end of the extended portion 7, so as to support a central portion of the upper hard sail 6 at the free end of the extended portion 7. Thus, there is formed the recess 8 on one surface of the upper hard sail 6, but no recess on the other surface thereof, and therefore a sectionally wing-shaped hard sail 4 is formed under its set-up condition by combining the lower hard sail 5 with the upper hard sail 6.

As mentioned above, composite sails are quite large devices, and because they have tall structures erected compared to ships without conventional sail devices, they may be affected by port facilities, bridges, etc. many. Therefore, if the hard sail is higher than the port equipment or bridge, the hard sail will get in the way, making it difficult to enter and leave the port and pass through the bridge.
