Abstract

PURPOSE: To form the titled polymer which has terminal hydroxyl groups without fail and a low-MW, by polymerizing an acrylic monomer by using hydrogen peroxide (initiator) which is in the form of a solution in an acetate ester.
CONSTITUTION: A solution of hydrogen peroxide in an acetate ester is formed by mixing a commercially available aqueous hydrogen peroxide solution (e.g., 30% aqueous solution) with an acetate ester (e.g., butyl acetate) and heating the mixture to the b.p. to remove water azeotropically. Then, an acrylic polymer, weight-average MW about 1,000W25,000, is formed by polymerizing an acrylic monomer (e.g., acrylic acid, butyl, acrylate, acrylonitrile) together with, if necessary, other monomers (e.g., styrene, α-olefin) with the aid of a catalyst which is hydrogen peroxide in the form of the above acetate ester solution. Here, it is preferred that a cycloalkanone (e.g., cyclopentanone) is previously added to the polymerization system.
