Abstract

PURPOSE:To improve the volumetric efficiency of intake and make an intake device compact, by using a pressurizing means to make the pressure of the intake higher than a prescribed level and by thereafter causing the adiabatic expansion of the intake to the prescribed pressure to cool the intake and by then feeding it into a combustion chamber. CONSTITUTION:When an intake valve 8 is opened under the operation of an engine 1, the intake negative pressure of a combustion chamber 2 acts to an intake passage 6 so that the air is sucked into the passage. The air is mixed with fuel supplied from a fuel injection nozzle 12. The mixture is introduced into the combustion chamber 2. When the flow rate of the intake goes up due to the rise in the degree of opening of a throttle valve 11, the flow rate of exhaust increases so that an exhaust turbine 10a is rapidly rotated as well as an intake supercharging pump 10b. At that time, the intake is adiabatically compressed by the action of the supercharging pump 10b so that the temperature of the intake rises. However, the temperature is thereafter lowered by an adiabatic expansion means 16 and a cooling means 17 which are provided in the intake passage 6 between the supercharging pump 10b and the combustion chamber 2.
