CONSTITUTION:When reproducing a tape which has formed a magnetic material layer 2 such as Co/Cr alloy, etc. having a strong magnetic anisotropy in the vertical direction, and a high magnetically permeable material layer 4, on a base film 5, a magnetic resistance effect MR element 9 is made to a main magnetic pole by forming so that the width tMR of a gap formed on the substrate surface by using, for instance, Ni/Fe alloy, etc. as a thin film becomes about 0.02-0.1mu. On the other hand, an auxiliary magnetic pole 7 is made thicker than the main magnetic pole 9 by use of Mn- and Zn ferrite, etc., and a winding 8 is installed. To the MR element 9, a current is made to flow in the direction as indicated with an arrow 11 from an electric power source 10, by which it is read that a magnetizing direction 12 is varied in accordance with strength and weakness of magnetic recording 3 of a recording medium 1, and a resistance value of the element 9 is varied.
